I am getting 5 hens from here. If you guys could give me some advice on which breeds I should get, that would be great. I am looking for the friendliest breeds. Also, I can't get all white chickens, cause they are like owl magnets at our house, but I can do barred.
As far as large fowl go. These stand out to me as all very friendly breeds. If you handle them everyday from a few days old though they will be much better as adults.

1. Speckled Sussix
2. Brahma's
3. Easter Eggers
4. Ameraucana's

Out of all the breeds I have ever owned, I have to say the friendliest are Golden Comets and non-hatchery SLW.. though I hardly have time to go and handle all my chicks on a daily basis, when I got GCs I could walk up to them and they were so inquisitive and are the only ones that don't try breaking their necks trying to get away, and my friend had some she handled alot and they were so friendly it was hard for her to keep them put up.. I like my wyandottes too..

If anyone is interested our rabbit club is having a picnic on Sept 29 5-9, dinner will be at 6.. Side and dessert dishes welcome but don't feel obligated.. RSVP with me if interested with # attending... I'll understand if noone can go though.. It is for rabbit club, but most of us own chickens...

Unfortunately, the more I ask questions the more it seems there isn't any hope, she thought since he was acting lively at the show he was ok.. she picked him up at some time this week and he's mostly bone, he may not have been eating or drinking for quite a while and this is one from the show, from the guy with sick chickens... We treated with as much stuff as we all had collectively (Sulmet, Vetrx, wazine, and penicilin), but it may be too late... Says he won't eat or drink and she has had him since Sunday and hasn't seen any poop. I'll tell her to try vitamins, but I hate for it to be something he'll never recover from and her put more money into him... You think it's too late? She said he has feather loss, but she didn't say anything about any external parasites, and I can't go over to put my hands on him and she says he looks normal..

I will be honest Stang...if he has lost that much weight and not eating it does not look good. I tried syringe feeding my SG hen that was attacked by the mink and after a week it was not better. I finally put her down. Once they get to this point there is sometimes not much that can be done. If he has lost that much weight he must be dehydrated. I wish I had the saline to run a drip and get some fluids in him. Sometimes like with a couple I had this year you just don't have an explanation. But I hate to say it...would be best to not let him suffer if he has not improved in a few days. So, so sorry.

I only have experience with a couple of those breeds. My ameraucanas are clownish and funny. My boys are drama queens and do the "danger, danger" call over EVERYTHING. The hens are really friendly, though. My orps are definitely the most friendly. They just want to hang around people, even when they don't have food. They even roost on me if I sit still long enough. My SLW are the least friendly. They're not UNFRIENDLY, they just like to admire humans from afar, unless there's food involved...

It's not bothering me any, I told her not to buy him... I told both my friends to stay away from that guy's birds (one went spend crazy and got a bunch of pale combed hens, 2 of which had spurs that I convinced her she shouldn't get), because what they might go through... It fell upon deaf ears, and I quote "It's a $10 gamble I am willing to take..." so, I'm only here to ask for suggestions, sounds mean, but it's what happens, she never picked the bird up to examine him so she had no idea how skinny he was... I myself bought one and it's my own fault if she doesn't make it for the fact I knew he had nothing but sick birds, I mean 1 of the birds died at the fair, but I will try to make her comfortable and hope she pulls through... will I ever add her to my flock? Depends on how she acts over the next 30 days... may only be a "layer" that will have to stay here until she dies. We'll see.. Thanks for the support though Terry, I'm unsure how to help besides find them replacements that are from GOOD breeders... so that's my goal now, I'm looking for LF Cochins, preferrably show quality and BBS, can be chicks, eggs, or adults. The bigger the better, she likes them big and fluffy! BTW, havn't heard from the other friend about hers being well or not... she may have bought some that are just old and parasitic..

Ahhhhhhemmmm...Bario...you put Ameracuanas on the bottom?.

Just kidding. I raise silkies and D'Uccles and love them. They are eager for attention if you ever start giving it to them. D'Uccles are very personable. Mine like to fly up on my shoulder for attention. Polish sweet they start going into the juvenile age..then they turn insane and high-strung . SO they are out. My Orps where very nice too but I have to fully agree on the Ameracuanas..they are wonderful.

The problem was they were wanting one ASAP and saw them on the first day at the fair and immediately decided they just had to have one... and Cochins aren't easy to find here, specifically the LF ones... The one who bought a bunch, bless her heart, wanted a bunch of white egg laying hens so got a bunch of the leghorns the dude had and they were all old and pale looking, but she informed me there are none in this area... I told them both, next time they're not allowed to go chicken shopping alone...

@Stang...people are going to think I am crazy and I hope I don't hurt sellers feelings but I am going to wear disposable gloves when I look at chickens..after seeing what Daphe is going through. Sometimes we just get caught up in the excitement of finding something we like we forget. I know I have. I think she has some very nice cochins...I know she has the bantams but thinking she has LF too. Will check to see. I will keep an eye out. Our next TSC show is the 29th..will check then. I saw a lot who had very nice looking chickens...but saw a couple that where obviously eat up with mites. I did not even go over to look. What makes me feel bad is I saw a couple buy two from them. They did not have a single feather on their bottoms and tummy's...so I guess I am assuming about mites but..that is what it looking like to me from 3 feet.

@Everyone..........When people come here now I ask them to put on painters booties and also to let me spray their hands before handling my birds. This may be overkill but...with the investment I have in my chickens I just won't take a chance. And it is protecting their chickens as well. This is something everyone may want to give thought. I even do it at my best friends and she takes good care of hers.
