Which brings up a question. What breeds tend to lay during the winter? At least, our winters in this area, considering they are usually pretty mild for the most part.

Good question StacyTN. Since I am new to this and mine are still young, only 8 weeks old I know I have a while to go but inquiring minds want to know!

Good to know you are in the area. Where exactly where are you (just general area)?

I have read that blk. australorps are supposed to be good winter layings. So, I did hatch out 9, 2 weeks ago but obviously they won't be ready for some time.

I currently have 51 chickens, with 5 (buff orps. & RIR) designated as our "laying hens" only. Even those I have for the purpose of breeding, in the future, all 51 range in age from 2 weeks to no older than 5-6 months. So, we want eggs now and hope anyday really to get some eggs from the oldest ones but we are tired of waiting

Stacy, I am up 58 in the Sweetwater, Niota area.

I only have 5 chickens right now LOL. I have 2 EE's and 3 Black Aussies. As I said, they are only 8 weeks old but I think I have 2 BA pullets and 1 EE pullet and of course the other two being roos. I plan to keep the EE Roo . I think he is gonna be pretty.

These are the EE's, they are very sweet..... CordonBleu the roo and Teriyaki who I am hoping is a pullet.

I too am off 58 but kind of between Ooltewah & Cleveland. Like 5 miles from Hwy60.

I currenty have bantam (18) & LF (8) Cochins, (7) blue & splash Langshan to hopefully breed.

The (8) blk. australorps, like I said were for the purpose of getting some hens (will not keep any roos, once I can determine). I had bought an incubator from a breeder, so he gave me some eggs from his pure breed flocks. I ended up with 3 speckled sussex & a welsummer. Still to be confirmed but I think I have maybe one pullet SS (will keep for laying) but cockerals will have to go. I think the Welsummer is a cockeral, might keep him (?), just because I think the roos are pretty & he would go in with the hens because even though they are all pure breed, don't want him mixing with the others I plan to breed.

I think I would like a couple or so EE, for layers, just because I like the colored eggs

and make my count 50 today, lost one of the 2 wk. old blk. australorps this morning. Hubbie had taken care of it before he went fishing. It was one that I had been doing everything to help with sticky butt,but I guess I just couldn't help it enough.

Any of the hybrid "production" breeds have a better chance of laying through the winter, IE

• Production Reds (red sex link)
• Black Stars or red stars
• Gold Sex Link
• Amber Links

Also some of the winter hardy and /or egg producing breeds usually lay ok all year long, IE

• Austrolorps (holds record for most brown eggs layed in a year)
• Leghorns (holds record for most white eggs layed in a year)

• Partridge Plymouth Rock
• Speckled Sussex

Don't do it! I tried to trim my Lhasa-poo and cut his hock to the bone with scissors. After paying $300 in emergency vet bills and putting up with the cone of shame for a month, the grooming costs seemed so much more reasonable.

That sounds awful. I am so sorry for both of you. I will never groom Riley myself. I have stretched his cuts to 8 weeks before but its not easy. I have blunt nosed scissors for shaping up his eyebrows & clipping between the pads on his feet. My groomer (his breeder) gets upset if I don't bring him every 4 weeks but I don't think its a money issue for her she just wants them to stay neat. He does start itching his ears if he goes too long!

I have 2 black austrolorps that are POL, one's comb just turned red but yet to see an egg.
