you know ive never had trouble here or anywere with the coyote.. skunks seem the worst, then coons then oppossums, and red foxes, but still not really to much trouble here. course i have a hunting cat and a rough collie. my neighbor's gsds however love to go after small children and animals and they are to old or just didnt care.. until my dog found he can break his chains cables and collars, when they attacked a little boy, and he tore the male apart. now when they so much as bark at any kids he goes berserk and they tear butt back in their apt. coyotes seem to mostly eat bugs and rodents, and neighbors have horses left out all day and night here in nothing but open field with no trouble, so doubt it coyotes, as see them snap up bugs and rodents around colts even all the time. i dont kill anything that is supposed to and naturally here, and just have maybe decent measures to prevent my unnatural animals bred to be easy to catch, safe.

I have lost birds due to forgetting to lock the cage at night and so forth, but the peahen was is a 10x10 chain link kennel. It even tried to chew through the chain link. Its on. Anything that brave ( my birds are prob. 50 feet from my house) doesn't not need to be around my house and won't be the first chance I get to see it.

I really believe every one on this page is pro life/health for all animals.
We have all had good and bad experiences with wild animals, after all we live in rural areas.
I do not know of one person on here that likes to do away with any animal other than for food or to be humane.

I do how ever agree that there are times when extreme action must be taken.
For instance TNBarnqueen had something that was getting past all her fences and defenses and kept coming back no matter what she did to prevent it. I have also had coons that there was no stopping without extreme actions.

This is a matter that I stand on the fence on.
I do not like it but at the same time, I know that there are times when action MUST be taken.
I hope I am not offending any one but this is MY PERSONAL opinion.

Dogs have been great livestock guardians for me thus far. I've yet to lose a bird to predators in over a year (knock on wood). It's been about 9 months since I started letting them free range sun-up to sun-down and my only death has been accidental hanging on a lawn chair

lawn chair? Do tell.

I agree with Talbout. We live in a no-kill area (I won't let my husband kill anything here) But we do have coyote, foxes, deer, racoons and even had a bear this summer. I have had coyotes go up and down my driveway. I would kill a coyote in a heartbeat. I will not chance them getting in a fight with one of our dogs, killing our cat or any of the animals. When they venture out of the woods onto our 'lit" up property, they are hunting.

We try to trap racoons that venture down and relocate them. But the foxes don't bother us. I don't consider us lazy....we kind of go out of our way to take care of everyone. (except for that bear - he needs to keep traveling) lol

OK, I don't post much on here at all, but I do keep up and read all the post daily. I feel like I have to comment on this post. Coyotes are a plague here and I have no problem trying to thin them down, just last month I had a turkey hen fly over my fence and land in the woods, I went to get my net and climb over the fence to rescue her and a coyote ran up and snatched her, with me not 20 feet from them. If I had my rifle that would have been one dead coyote. As far as them just eating bugs and rodents, this is just not true-my neighbor runs a dairy with over 100 cows, he had a fence jumper cow, when she jumped the fence one night and seperated herself from the herd a gang of coyotes ripped her to pieces, we saw the poor cow-or what was left of her- the next day. this was a 1200 pound dairy cow. My Mennonite neighbors have lost young calves to them also. I certainly don't believe in useless killing, but sometimes there just gets to be so many of these coyotes you have to thin them down some. Sorry if I offended anyone.

I agree poultrylady!! And coyotes would be the reason I have Jay-jay, my donkey. I have seen coyotes jump our fences to track deer through our pasture, no deer or coyotes since Jay-jay took over the pasture.

The lawn chair was in the young ducklings pen to get a closer view for "duck tv". They apparently got curious about it and Shells, thus named because she always tried to stick her head back into her shell after hatching, stuck her head in a spot that was tight enough and just high enough that she either strangled herself or popped something loose in a panic. Was kind of sad to lose one in that manner, especially a young female.

And on a general note, remember not to read too much into forum posts. Sarcasm is completely lost in text and some posts are written in a manner that is easily misconstrued.

OK Time to change the subject, and FAST.

Chickies that hatched off Sunday and Monday are doing great.

Started collecting for November 1 setting.

Going Saturday or Sunday to look at buying EVERYTHING chicken that a friend of mine has.
Chickens, feeders, waterers, pens nest, incubators, brooders, EVERYTHING.

Could more than double my flock, and add several new breeds.

I can tell you this, NOT everyone I live with, nor my GF is very happy about this.
But from the way he talked on the phone, I do not know how I can pass on this deal.

BTW I will be broke till spring time if this goes through.

PS: If no one hears from me after the week end. Please sent eggs to my funeral.
