Newbie...

Here's my question. Suppose someone lives inside the Maryville city limits. What's the reputation of animal control? The city ordinances online say nothing about there being any rules against them, but I hear people say there is a 1988 ordinance... chickens prior to that are grandfathered, and it's against the law to have them after that. I know Knoxville legalized them, and Chattanooga is working on it. Are there any horror stories out there about Maryville? I can find NOTHING in writing about it, and I don't want to take some bureacrat's word.

Thanks!

For all your fellow Maryvillians - I just had a conversation with a John Jagger about keeping chickens within the city limits of Maryville. Someone who already had chickens asked me if I knew the law and I decided to find out. According to the zoning ordinances and municipal codes, livestock (including chickens) are not allowed inside the city limits, unless said livestock was in place before the ordinance was went into effect in 1988.

To get the ordinance changed you would need to start with a petition to the 5 city council members. According to Mr. Jagger, he's been keeping up with the ordinance change request in Knoxville and he said they didn't vote on it last evening (for the second time). He is aware that keeping chickens is a hot topic in cities all around the country. His phone number is 865-273-3520.

Thank you. I had seen that post as well, which was the first I heard that it might be illegal. I suppose I'll PM kcsunshine directly to see if he/she actually saw the 1988 ordinance, or if they are simply taking someone else's word on it.

I have some good news. Hubby is letting me buy an incubator. I updated the chickens blog on why he is too. Mostly we have lost too many hatchlings to other hens. Now I have to see what incubator I want for the money I am looking to spend which is max about $500.00

Wow~~ You are so lucky to get to spend so much...one suggestion...but this is just my personal thoughts. I would take a little of the money and buy a air-forced Hova which is around 110.00 (what I gave for mine...shipping incl.) Reason being...if something happens to one..you have a back up. Also...makes staggered hatching so much easier when you have one to incubate in and one to hatch in. Like I said..just a thought.

X2

I stagger my hatches, too. I have two LG's for incubating and use my Brinsea with automatic humidity control for hatching. Every egg that goes into lock down hatches.

i might try to let my hens brood some eggs of other types if i can get some (or even have room, depending on how my over heated clutch does... lol), as the two black hens especially, but the four bigger games, are deciding to pair off and take turns tag team brooding eggs and even a rock they somehow got into nest from across run... chickens cannot over mother their eggs, can they, or is it good they are so over broody and protective? as the little one will sit on an egg or two but usually gets moved off by bigger hens.
