Is it even worth it. When I now they are cockerels I off them and they go to the dog. Right now I have teo people that want a cockerel with their pullets so they can have a small flock.

Speaking of which anyone know if Knox or JC is allowing chickens in town? I know they were on the agenda but do not know if it passed.

I will say that if I can give away boys then I will before bothering with caponization. In certain circumstances it is worth it though. For example I already have my main roo but If I had a hatch with a bunch of boys in it that I could not give away then I would rather put some weight on them before bothering with slaughter. If I left them intact, more than likely they would not survive my main roo while they were growing up. Even if I kept them separate they would probably still fight with each other by the time they reached 12 weeks. A capon will be treated no differently by the roos than one of the hens and the meat stays tender even if you let them go a whole year. It's a good way to grow out a bunch of roos together until slaughter and they will yield more meat than a hen of the same breed because they retain most of the size of a roo, just not the meat toughening testosterone. It's also just plain fun I suppose

That actually reminds me... Someone wanted a cockerel to get some fertile eggs this summer. Right now I can say that I am going to have at least 3 that were hatched on Jan. 28th. Tell me for sure if you want one before I turn them all into capons. Im going to try maybe for next Saturday evening if I am not on that job.

It was in the JC paper this morning that they hadn't discussed the details as of yet, but the laws are being reviewed

Kim is in SC at a woman's christian conference and I had a job pop up I absolutely have to start on tomorrow or loose it. Plus I have Megan this weekend because her dad cancelled. I seriously need a stress reduction program.....

Well...I can tell you about stress....screaming does actually help. As does chopping wood...taking a very long walk and hope you can make it back...and my favorite...hooking up the horse trailer and heading for the hills. Which is why I am running away Thursday....buuuuttt..gotta come home Sunday. I would love to know what it is like to have a 2 week vacation away from home with nothing but the wind at our backs. For now I want to go to a chicken show!!!!

if id known or remembered, id have thought to ask on here if anyone had a female rat to spare for breeder (friendly hopefully), as went out and bought baby albino feeder rat not thinking how long it would be till she is old enough to be more than a wrth while anyway to get as companion for my last male (gave rest away as pets, and mean ones as feeders). dont worry i keep my ratties inside and spoiled more over, aside from needing bigger cage, which trying to pull off.. actually id trade on some fancy pigeons, budgies babies and breeders, as well as finches, and cages for the smaller birds, for good sized small spaced barred rat cage maybe, and especially if anyone would have decent cages or built coop for pigeons (hoping for something size of eight doors put together i think).

well my four flight eggs all hatched and are starting to look decent, though first babies that i know of for parents and they were trying to stuff the babies so full the babies were barfing up and asperating pigeon milk curds all over for first days.

a beautiful sharp shinned hawk tried to take out one of my performing/roller fledglings, sending them flying off as well as mamma and the hawk when i came barreling out, and with that, the huge loud plane coming through so loud and low close just over head, and then this good storm, im not sure ill see my babies again..

cat seems back and fourth on her kittens, but made a huge litter box for rotund butt to be able to use easier. lol though she on and off tries her darndest to get out as time seems to be approaching. she has suddenly stopped eating like a piggle, but spending time downstairs so could be hunting, though discovered the screen pushed out on the window of one room tonite and her sitting right below acting innicent contented and sleepy.

Female cats go back into heat 3 day after giving birth. That is why cat population is so big and such a shortage of homes.

I came home to a brood hen with 8 little chicks!! This little hen started going broody but had no eggs..so I helped her out. She hatched out all 8 of her eggs including a little SG silkie that is beautiful.

I hope the rain is gone for a while. I am never going to get pens finished. Is everyone around Knoxville OK?? We where lucky..the most part of the storm went around us.

Oh....I saw this on the news and am sure others also did but want to mention it. A family in SC had 6 chicks in a brooder on their enclosed back porch. Their cat KeeKee noticed and got too curious. It jumped up on it knocking the heat lamp off which fell blowing the bulb up. That set the porch on fire and ended up burning their house down. I had never thought about something like that so I am latching down my lamps now. No one bothers mine but....I am sure KeeKee lost more than one life in that experience. She lost some whiskers and a few on her head but was a very lucky cat. They said 3 chicks died and did not know about the other 3....and KeeKee was not commenting.

So...with this being the start of heavy incubating...everyone be careful!

They are so cute! I have been looking for SGs, SG hatching eggs in this area, can you help me out, or point me in the right direction?

Let me finish my next test hatch....I have 2 SG roos and 1 Partridge hen....so I have them mixed with others to see what my percentage is. My hens are just now starting to lay and am hoping they don't go broody. I have already had 3 who have. I keep telling them I need eggs!
Give me a shout later in case I forget.
