Omg, I have been in the marans thread trying to figure out how to breed them to sop and I am more confused now than when I started. Ugh I started a 4page debate by asking if you can breed black to blue and holy crap .now I know to breed them separate. I then posted a pic of my roo and they told me not to use him because he has yellow between his toes. Then said to breed my hens to a yellow legged roo to see if any chicks come out with yellow legs. I had a production red hatch out chicks from this roo in question and all of the chicks have dark legs but they still say not to use him. If the test mating works for the hens why not the roo ? Ok, i am going to bed .....my brain is shot for the night
RUN AWAY!!!! Those are the BYCers I was warning ya'll about... the type, not the specific people... though it might be the same people. LOL

Don't listen to that crap. Sorry to be blunt, but they all think they are God's gift to this or that breed and their birds are the Alpha and Omega of their breed.

Read your SOP, go to shows, learn what is required for them (and I'm thinking BCM is not in the standard... am I right? Only Wheaten?) and don't listen to those people. They make me so flippin mad telling people their birds are sub-par and discouraging them from breeding... it's just jealousy, pure and simple.

Go to APA's website, find the best breeders for your breed and contact them. THEY can help you... 99% of these BYCers are just pet owners who think highly of themselves. The other 1% know what they are talking about and would never discourage someone by telling them "not to use" a bird.

Can you tell that makes me mad?!?! He has a good body and BODY matter long before color between the toes. If toe color is all you have going against you, then you have about as perfect as Marans Roo as there ever was.

Jerks! AGH!

thank you. The moderator wants eggs out of them in the spring then all of a sudden they tell me not to use him. A guy in Canada wants to buy him....lol . Thank you I am going to use him on my hens anyway. If he does have a receive yellow gene. It only makes sense to me that you can breed that out. That is what receive means anyway. Right?

I am going to ask about the picnic. I plan on bringing a triple chocolate cake (not as rich as it sounds) and ??? Any suggestions?
yea...
add some more chocolate

EXACTLY! Exactly right that you can work on that.... and do ME a favor and don't sell them a darn egg. Jealous bleepity bleeps. God that makes me mad.... it was done to me too, so I know how they are and it probably has some of the same people in the crowd.

I doubt anyone (Marans Breeders) agrees with me and will berate me probably. But here it is anyway.

It will only get worse. Why? Because no one can bring in fresh blood for the FBCM's. Everything out there came out of two lines (I Believe) Thats it...no more. People will be able to scramble to breed certain traits for the next several years, but eventually the breed will be crap unless new blood comes in. I think it is funny now to hear of some people talk about the non feather legged variety like it is another type. It is not another type..it is a fault that keeps getting worse. The French get one every once in a while like a sport and from what I understand; cull it immediately.
Yes I know the smooth leggs are supposedly the "English" variety. Where do you think they got them from, LOL It was the genetic crap that the French did not want. :)

And then replace him with what?

I get what you are saying Bairo... I do. I deal with SFHs and Sulmtalers and bantam Barnevelders - all have no "fresh blood" that is possible at this time. But I would still use him... For one, body matters far more than anything and his body is good. For two, you just said the whole breed will only get worse (by that I assume you mean getting more clean legged) so why not use a boy with great body? Greenfire will surely get some over in no time. They already have Birchen Marans. And if not, then clean legged is the future for Marans in the US anyways.

Quote: Oh no...I did not mean to imply he/she should not use him. I was only stating what I see in response to what those so and so's over at the Marans thread would say. Absolutely breed for the standard, especially the French standard. Hopefully before the genetics get worse, someone will bring in new blood.

Hobby; Stacy is absolutely correct. Don't let them get you down. I get fired up too and was more stating what I would like to tell some of those people about the breed just to get a rise out of them. The great thing about breeding him to different types is that it is not like you are going to change his genetics if it does not produce what you want...you just try breeding him to another with different traits. You should be able to find the right combination and produce some more good birds. Now as far as letting any non standard offspring out into the world, that is another matter. But hey... most of us like chicken soup.
