thanks for coming to the picnic everyone....it's always nice to meet who your talking to on the website. we will try to have a couple a year starting again in the spring.

Dont forget about the Cocke County show though in Newport on November the 10th. If you want to show and never have, get hold of me and I'll get you the registration info. If not showing you want to get there by 9am or earlier to snag the good deals and better selection on birds.

The picnic was really nice: people, food, clucking and weather was great. I too like being able to put faces with screen names. I hope to get to meet more of "our" people...I may go against my rule of not going to shows and come to Newport next month.

My weekly update brings some sad news

I am thinking I was completely wrong on my initial guess of 3 to1 now leaning more toward just the opposite 1 pullet & 3 cockerels. The one black I am not positive but have doubts there may still be hope.

I hate when those 3 to 1 ratios are like that... the 3 cocks to 1 gal type... It always seems to happen to me... I think I got 10 (the number eludes me right now) cochins 8 cockerels and 2 pullets from my last hatch... I always have more respect for hatcheries, because I have heard people blame hatcheries for sending them more cockerels on purpose... but I do believe after so many hatches, it is never 50/50 100% of the time.

For those of you who missed the picnic I want to share a pic of the potato salad I made so you will understand why I said not to eat the eye.
The eye was a peppercorn and the chick is made out of home canned lime pickles.

You and me both. I think out of my Spring hatches I believe 12 hatched & only 5 pullets (I am still counting both whites as pullets). So I guess it wasn't too bad. If it turns out to be 3 cockerels then I guess I will be trying to find homes for 2 or 3 boys.

BTW I see why everyone demands your cupcakes they were yummy!

How cute!!
I think over half my hatches this year where cockerels. I agree it looks like you have 3 cockerels and 1 pullet. I am giving the idea Stacy had about the incubation temp being a factor in sex a lot of thought... so...I always incubate at 100....the next batch will be 98-99. I think Bario is testing that theory right now too. I hope, hope, hope my silkie mamma hen has gone broody. I put her in with the chicks I have hatched but they don't understand yet to get under the old gal and stay warm! But the heat lamp is still on them...they will figure it out. It took them 10 minutes to understand that when mamma goes to the food and says "cluck, cluck" that means eat. They are rushed in at the same time!!
Glad everyone had a good time..wish I could have been there. I think our spring one is in Morristown again?? Cherokee Dam is a good place to but don't know about a pavilion. We have plenty of time to find out! Glad you are coming to the show littlechicklet...you will really like it.

Ok. Y'all are killing me! I went out of town for the weekend and came back to 200 posts. I have been on this thread all afternoon.

It's so funny that you posted pix of the orps and was worried about them being boys. The little splash I kept has ALWAYS been girly until I went out there tonight. All of a sudden her comb is way bigger than the other splash pullet I have that is at least a week older. She's still got fluffy feathering and dainty legs like a girl but the comb is making me real nervous.
