Eastern Kings look very menacing but are great to have around. We have a lot of black rat snakes around this area also...but they can be a little aggressive. I'll take the eastern kings any time. I actually look for them to come back every spring.

here is a good pic of a young one
Eastern King snakes are predatory on copper heads....so...if you have some around do what you can to keep them there. They get appx. a little less than 3 ft. long and not menacing. Only way they or any other snake will bite is if you put it into a situation where they have to be defensive. Oh...Snakes can strike the exact distance of 1/2 their length! There is another snake in our area called the Hog Nosed snake. looks like the pic below and color can vary. They CAN NOT bite you. They are rear-fanged and only eat frogs. They will spread their heads if being defensive as well as turn over and blow their bellies up like they are dead. I had a student who would catch one for me every spring that i kept as a pet then I would release them in the fall so they could hibernate. Many people mistake them for a copperhead because their pattern is also diamond shape. If you look at the head they are unmistakable.

HEHE, well if you must breed, I can totally find you a decent rabbit to breed, and you can use one of my bucks... I breed only for the betterment of the breed.

Definately. I think I'll have me some ducks come April. Maybe I can start on rabbits in May. Lord help me stay calm come June.

I saved a big black snake, it got tangled up in some deer netting I had balled up under a tarp and some wood, apparently is was doing what my cat has yet to do and go for the field mice... I cut it free, at first I thought it was dead and grabbed it's tail to try to free it, then it started to wiggle... lol, I got some neighboring help and cut it loose and freed it...

I think I will lurk from now on. I have tried twice & both times I get shut down. Oh well it was worth a try. Did you like the looks of BB? I think she is pretty & can't wait to cross her with your babies.

I love her! I think she has a pretty head, comb, and wattles, too. If you are breeding towards showing, combs aren't that high on the scale of things they judge, points-wise. The most important thing is type (body size and shape). My little eight-month-old cockerel was DQ'd in Newport for being too heavy.

You've probably already seen this, but here's link to Jeremy's website where he has some of the British orp standard. Here's the link for a summary of the US SOP. I really like this page because it has pictures of the US and British orps side by side. I think I've decided I'm somewhere in the middle. I'm working on broader heads and improving eye color because sometimes I'll hatch light brown eyes. Other than that, I think they're pretty perfect. (An APA judge would completely disagree, I'm sure)

I think BB's feathering is a little looser than the US SOP, but I think it makes her really pretty!

I would have been passed out at the first wiggle. I'm not really a girly-girl, but if I see a snake less than 10 yards away, I loose all logic and scream and run away like it's going to chase me.

Quote: lol...it's ok. I was going to tell her. Just wanted to give her crap for not seeing them at the picnic. It may not go well anyway. Even if in a perfect world I got a double blue gene in a rooster and some splash or black hens, it is still fighting a loosing battle. There are only 2 people that I know of working on trying to save the breed, so keeping it going might prove overwhelming. I saw a couple examples and got the eggs before I realized they were nearly non-existent and would turn out to be such a difficult project. That's what I get for being spontaneous, LOL
