Eastern Washington

Does anyone still check this thread out? I am in Eastern Washington, between Cheney and Colfax. I have to be vague about my whereabouts, sorry. Ex issues, if you follow me. We currently have 4 grown RIRs and 4 BOs, all of whom are 1 year old, roughly. (Got them last Spring) We are also broodering (is that a verb?) 14 chicks; 5 Black Jersey Giants, 5 Australorps, and 4 BOs. It was 5 BOs, but one died today. :( I am wondering if anyone ever gets together, just to chatter about their birds, or show them off to each other? I'd actually love to figure out how to set up a chicken show for the folks in our area. We homeschool, so any opp to socialize is a good one. :) How do you do a 'chickenstock'? Is that a play on Woodstock? Just a social gathering to learn and make friends? I'd love to learn more! Thanks, one and all.

hi dawnjerrene! I generally check this out every morning when I do my email, before the day gets going. "Chickenstock" hahaha never heard of that... that's too funny! When the weather is nice, we sometimes get a little scarce on here, but most of us check in every day or two. So welcome, and happy broodering!

(Hey, if you say it's a word, it's a word so there!)

Welcome dawnjerrene! I have fond memories of Colfax... I lived there while going to school in Pullman. I live a bit far for a meet-up (I will be moving from the wet side to Dixie (near Walla Walla this fall), but it sounds like fun! Like most on here, I get busy when the sun is shining, but I do catch up when I get a chance. Feel free to show off your birds... We all love a pretty chicken :D

Another "wet-side" lurker with E-WA ties saw my laments about my terrible hatch rates with the shipped eggs and hooked me up with some local, non-shipped hatching eggs. I have met so many knowledgeable, helpful, and kind people on BYC, and this is just another example. So, set 9 Cream Legbar eggs yesterday... 2 under my broody and 7 in my brinsea mini. We will see what come out on the 24th!

Whiski, I love your pics! I got a turkey this year and I am disappointed to find how friendly she is! She has even perched on my lap. Ugh, it will be hard to eat Butterball

My fatties are overdue to be processed as im having trouble locating a large pot (cheap) to scorch them prior to plucking. This will be my first time and am nervous about it. Fortunately, those guys are not nice and are kinda repulsive!!!
We had two babies hatch so far!!! Unfortunately, one clutch might be done since mom had to leave the nest to cover the first baby because it ran outside. I am disgusted as I wasn't checking them much that day as I thought it would be two more days until they hatch. The second clutch I am hopeful will do well! First one hatched today from that clutch. They will be cute tiny birds,!
We wont be eating Chucky. She comes and goes as she pleases. We only see her when the dog is put up and the chickens are out. she likes the chickens. I dont think I would be able to eat any of my birds. I dont have the stomach for processing.

I only had 3 hatch from two clutches. the first one also either ran from the nest or fell out and momma deserted her eggs. Not sure why the second clutch only hatched 2 out of 17. All three are growing up fast. Gonna be selling them soon. One is black like my momma hens and the other two are buff and white like my Blondie girl. Once things slow down over here with work, we will be redoing some fencing along the pasture and rebuilding the red barn. I also want to move the chicken coop and build it bigger and better.

I was going through my phone and found the last picture I have of Rosie, and of all the girls together. The flock is just all black and white now. I miss that splash of color.
