Eastern Washington

Ooh! I do hope you post pictures of all the things you get out of that wood! It's like a hidden surprise when you varnish wood.

If I can figure out how to get the pictures off my phone I will. I am really hoping that it won't cost an arm and a leg to get it done, my income is only $100/month, so it is going to be tight. Maybe since we have a HUGE tree that is black walnut as well he might take part of the wood as payment, the wood I am starting with is a different tree's stump. The other one is going to come down when the original chicken coop comes out, like it was my Great-Grandma's chicken coop that is a small 2 story house. It is down to one level due to decay, which that wood might be interesting pots as well, but I am scared to get near the building to get it.

Awesome, nonetheless! That's going to be some chicken coop! You'll be able to start a commercial operation

My chicken coop is still a year out, but that is an idea, luckily we have a couple more walnut trees, and a ton of locus trees as well o the main property. We have trees coming down every day around town it seems. But my coop is going to be a small coop for 3 chickens. I don't want a lot of chickens because the garden is my main focus right now. Maybe chicken math will kick in once I get the house set up, but I know I have to take it easy on the budget for the first 2 years at least. Hopefully my job will bring in another child and I can make a few more dollars to help with the offset. It is just a waiting game right now, Grandpa already said no on anymore animals out there, so it really has to wait. Grandpa's health has taken a few turns that are really worrying Dad and I the last week, so we are trying to take it easy on animals and fencing.

Hi all. My Black Australorps are getting huge! I got them in February. I expect they will be laying soon. I do have one pullet that I need to probably put down. Her feet are terribly messed up. She sort of hobbles. They look like arthritis or something. They will not flatten.

Other than that the others seem to be thriving.

Scram, you might want to do a search on bumble foot. Sounds like what might be going on, and with some work you can often cure it. Course, some chickens just have weird feet! Good luck!

So I measured the "stump" and it is 5 feet long and just short of 3 feet across. Dad says it has been dead for quite a few years, but hasn't been "down" for very long, don't know if I still have to wait after it is made into boards for it to cure. Anybody know anything about this? Talked to a friend and he is willing to help me build but informed me that I am making some expensive planters, I don't buy much lumber but I guess Black Walnut is pretty pricey at the hardware store. Think I might wait a year to get the bench made, so I can make it with a mix of cherry and locus as well. We have a ton of locus, I just have to remember that we burn a lot of wood over the winter. I know the locus and cherry will have to wait for the cure, but it could be really pretty. Going to made a couple cutting boards as well, since that is pretty simple and will help me get used to the saws and other tools.

black walnut can be extremely expensive, especially pieces longer than 4ft and wider boards, but I can't remember the price off the top of my head. Cutting boards would be good practice. Good luck!

So I was taking the garbage out, and my oldest son followed me and heard a strange noise coming from the bushes. I walk over to see what he is staring at and the leaves are moving on the mass of bushes, ivy and who knows what else. We are standing there and I tell him there is a quail in there talking, all of a sudden out pops this little quail chick!!!! He had never seen one before and started to go towards it, so I told him no, that we could watch for a couple of minutes and to go get the neighbor, so she can see. They come back and out pops another one, and it just walks across the ivy leaves, cute as could be. Hopefully the stray cats around here will leave them alone, thinking about getting some wild bird seed and tossing a handful in the grass by the bush for when they come out in the afternoons. We have never had babies in that bush for as long as I have lived there, so it is pretty exciting.

Maybe you should just sell the black walnut if it's at a premium and buy a more moderatley priced!wood?
