Thanks! I can't take any credit for breaking any new ground in home built incubators... but I am happy to report I had good success with mine!

And while I feel like a mama hen watching over my new chicks... I'm actually a chicken daddy.

Mrs. Mucket :

I bought 8 straight run chicks from the Trent Big R last year and 3 were girls. So that's better than 80% if that gives you any hope!
If you do have cockerels you could try selling or giving them away via Craigslist. Someone may want a BO, BA or BR roo, and other people will take cockerels to grow out as meaties.

Thanks for the encouragement! I know a cockerel should be fairly easy to get rid of...but we l-o-v-e them already and will be so sad to see any of them go. I have a gut feeling our Henny is not a a hen.

Will wait a few more weeks and post a picture for any guessers.

Wondering if we happen to have to get rid of 1 or more, would I still be able to get replacement chicks in 4 weeks time? Locally I mean. Will I be able to get them outside quicker since temps (in theory!) should be more moderate?

We are in Spokane. (not sure how to edit that info so it shows up under my username.)

Aslin-Finch has chicks coming in on March 16 & 30, April 13 & 27, May 11 & 25, and June 8. I would call though and ask if they are getting any "spares" or if you need to order them ahead of time.

Well it certainly sounds like replacing a chick or two should be pretty easy. I'll call Aslin Finch to inquire. Thanks for the tip!

How's everyone's chicks doing? Or how are your plans to get chicks coming?

My chicks are 1 1/2 weeks old already. They have begun jumping around flapping their wings... but aren't too good at it. Haha.

I've started building my coop. It's a large movable tractor kind. It's 4'x9'... and boy is it getting heavy! And I'm not even done. Still got walls and roof and hardware cloth to put on. Looks like the wifey won't be moving this barge! haha

Cheers!

I got my day old EE chicks from NW Seed and Pet in mid-August last year. They had to live outdoors by 6 weeks old b/c they were too big to keep indoors anymore. Being a 1st time chicken mommy, it was hard putting them out in the coop when the weather just started getting cold last year. They did fine though. In the future, I'd definitely get chicks in the spring instead of late summer so they could have more outdoor time in the nice, warm, sunny weather.

My chicks come in next Wednesday at Aslin-Finch! I have three walls up on my coop, 4'x6'8", and I can relate to the heaviness! Mine is not moveable, made from palets & pallet crates, but it weighs a freaking ton! There is no way it's going anywhere, lol.

I got my brooder set up last week, so all I need to do is plug it in on Monday to be ready.

Looks like I'll be scoping the leftovers there for a replacement BR...our little one is a roo and he cannot stay!
