Eastern Washington

I'm in up in Omak.

I noticed that you were thinking of getting ducks. I just got back from a conference in Portland and found that a weasel (most likely) got 2 of my runner ducks... I have one black hen left who might need a new home...
That's so sad. Sorry for your loss.
When I found out how small of a hole weasels could squeeze through I felt like it was impossible to keep my chickens safe. That was when I lived in East Wenatchee. Now that we have moved out into the "wild, wild, woods" of Entiat and having space for the chickens to range around I didn't want to build them a Fort Knox again. I thought the livestock guardian dog would be the perfect answer. He can keep my kids safe while they are playing outdoors too :)
I feel so sad for your hen duck. And just in case it was me you were asking, how do you think she would do being the only duck with my chickens? I was thinking I'd have to do a little more work to get set up for ducks before I get them in the spring. I've never had them before so I don't know much about them yet.

What kind did ya get??? I REALLY want a Pyr for my not-yet-existing goats!
We got a Kangal/Boerboel. Here's a picture of his daddy.

I thought I wanted a Gr. Pyr, too. I hear they do an excellent job and I thought it wouldn't be too hard to find one. But my husband wasn't too excited about them. I NEED hubby to be excited about these projects of mine ;) I also heard Gr. Pyr. can be prone to bark a lot. At night, mostly, too. But, anyway, long story short, we found our puppy right off the bat so that made the choice easy. We LOVE him. I am super excited about his cross, too. He combines the flock guardian traits with some more people oriented qualities that I like, too.

Gorgeous dog!!! I have been hearing about Kangals and know very little about them or Boerboels. Very intriguing!

A weasel??? Wow! I am in Omak as well and did not know we had them.. Well then.. Guess I will be doing more serious work on my run than I thought.. So sorry for your loss.. :( We lost 4 hens to grrr my cat this year. I was a mess over it... Lesson learned. Check run DAILY! Now I watch said cat stalking the run and trying to find a way in but has yet to succeed, he gives me the stink eye a lot now... That was a painful lesson for myself and my kids....

I may have to take you up on that and buy a couple. I wouldn't be able to buy them until Fri, though.

I am so bad right now. Goats have been on my mind a lot lately and I've been considering other creatures to try, i.e., turkeys, ducks and geese. I only have a little over 2 acres so I have to be careful! Well, that and the fact that the DH is not at all excited about my dream! There is a lot of work to do to get some shelters built up so that is certainly holding me back for now!
Watch out! I didn't even have goats on my mind and now I have 2. We will be building a shelter this weekend. Right now they are in my "barn" which is an old leaky lean to at the back of my garage.
I'm worried goat math might strike like chicken math did to me last year! I was going to get 3 or 4 chickens and I had 16 at one point.
