Update on my chicks. Still only have the 3. I have 2 yellows and a black. I havent seen any other babies yet. Momma hens are still on their nests so aparently, they arent done hatching. The 3 chicks are tiny but fiesty and healthy looking.

What does that mean?
It means that the eggs instead of being laid are retained inside the body of the hen, with out the shell. They make a very large impaction that becomes infected, not much hope. You need to look in the health pages on BYC and get more information. but I don't think that this sounds like your hen. They usualy have large swollen area between vent and breast area. Hope that this helps.

I'd never heard of that! She doesn't feel swollen at all. I think she's probably just taking a break, but with Rosie's prolapse scare last month, I'm more of a worrywart than usual.

Been uber busy the last couple days. Got the new pig fence up, behind the barn cleaned up, two greenhouses on the raised beds, new door on the puppy house, yard cleaned, lumber shed built, and 1 cord of firewood stacked! I'm tired tonight!

Tomorrow I measure and cut lumber for the new coop!

Hopefully you get a few more chicks! I would take any "leftover" eggs away at 4 or 5 days from your first hatch, otherwise your hen might continue sitting and neglect her chicks.

chickengarden, I've been missing you! It's actually quite sunny today, though a bit chilly. The snow hit here Sat. night, and destroyed one of my maples. Another was hurt, but can be saved. They were blooming, so held a lot of snow, and the branches weren't strong enough to take the load. I'm so disappointed!
Glad you're making such good progress on the fencing! It sounds like you've got more animal friends than I can imagine! I think it's so cool!
So sorry about your maple, Vicki.
We moved into a yard once that had no trees at all and I planted a red oak. It didn't grow much the following year but the year after that it grew 2 feet in the spring. Then we had some crazy windstorm in May and it snapped and took all the new growth and 3" of the previous year! I was devastated and it was on Mother's Day, too!

Last night I put all my new baby chicks to bed with the big girls. The youngest are 6 weeks old and the oldest are 8. They are all fully feathered and have been outside during the day and kept at 50 at night. I'm sick of them being in my milking room. I should never have put birds in there. Gross.

The guineas and our turkey also were put to bed in the hen house and it was so cute to have the guineas following me. I was able to get them to by carrying the turkey and whistling. They love the turkey. I think they think he's their momma.

Hope everyone has a great Wednesday :)
