Alright, are we all ready for some amazing before and after photos? Her is my 28yr old Arab gelding, Khlassi. I have owned him for 22 years and he is my baby

He started dropping weight fast a couple weeks ago over at my aunt Linda's and we were all stumped because she has good pasture.

BEFORE:::

AND AFTER!!! This is just 6 days after coming home to my house to be pastured on my rich pasture

he's a beauty!

Does anyone have or know of anyone who has a wyandotte pullet? My friend just lost hers. Just let me know! I can always check craigslist too....

maggierose, I'm the one who asked about the strawberry treats. So at 11 days now, is it okay to see if these girls would like a berry? I look at them in their brooder in the closet, and think they must be so bored. I got a bird toy with a bell on the end, not interested. put some little boxes in there for them to hop up on and jump off, but that's all I can think of. Do you think they might like some shredded lettuce? Is it too soon?

OHHHHH Ninetreesmom!!!  Oh I'm dying of sweetness here!!!  Just adorable!  Congratulations!!

Thanks Maggie! And I agree with your signature. They are definitely my therapy, from adorable chicks to dorky, clumsy, hilarious youngsters to my hens when they get their panties in a bunch. Constant mood enhances, plus the eggs :)

VickisGirls... you can try it... my girls still turn up their little beaks at whatever they don't like... hahaha... and really they are all about grains. I really thought they'd like veggies, fruits, etc, but they are all about grass, grains, oats, etc. at least for now. Silly birds! Whodathunk! They have great conversations about anything new... like worms... they talk to that worm, then to each other, then poke it, then talk some more... really quite a discussion about what they are eating! Hillarious!

Ninetreesmom... so true... there's nothing better than holding a contented chicken until she falls asleep in your arms... so sweet

Hey, has anybody seen Chaebird on here... it's almost July and time for that little one (human!) to arrive!

Vicki, we sure did feel that earthquake! The epicenter was 17 miles as the crow flies from our house. First one I ever remember of my life. We heard a loud boom (like thunder) and then everything shook. So freaky!

Everybody ready for the heat wave? We are supposed to have 103 today.

Earthquakes are really scary, huh.
Have been waiting to hear if you got Roman's sister.
Are you right on the river so you can go sit there during the heat wave?

I'll bet Chae is miserable in this heat.

I've got seven eggs in the bator!!
Good day to all.

Also, thanks, maggierose. Do I need to grind up the oats for the chicks, or soak them or anything? What about the grass... do I cut it in tiny pieces?

Off to the hardware store to get supplies for a new chicken tractor. My Cream Legbar cockerels have officially outgrown the brooder, and the new chicks need the larger brooder :)

As I start this project, I am suddenly completely overwhelmed by all of the stuff we have to move to the new place. An entire household is bad enough, but add the farm stuff, including 4 horses, 18 chickens, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 1 bunny, and all of their various shelters, feeders, waterers, etc., not to mention all of the equipment and outdoor stuff. I guess one load at a time. Some of it we can trickle over this summer, but of course some has to wait until we move too. Whew!

We also figured out all of the fencing we are going to be doing on the new farm this summer. Between perimeter and cross fencing it is over 2 miles!

This change in our lives is so exciting, but also intimidating and overwhelming at times.

Wow, it's hot our there!

My girls free range in the fenced-in garden area, so are finding their preferred shade. Right now my coop is a lightweight feed store coop inside a 6x6 chain link kennel, (they'll have bigger digs by the end of the summer), and I bought a sheet of 2" foil-lined dense foam insulation (R19 at least) for the top of the run and covered it with tarps. My engineer-in-training son helped work out the ventilation to take advantage of any breeze. The 4x8 sheet covered most of the top after cutting to fit, and that seems to be keeping the worst of the heat out. Yesterday, the girls spent the hottest part of the afternoon in coop/kennel instead of burrowed in the dirt under the barberry bushes where they spent the late morning, so it must have been the coolest place at that time. I put out a couple of glass pie plates filled with ice cubes in the kennel, and they seem to like walking through the melted ice water. Changing the drinking water frequently, and have the mister hose running every hour for 15 min. I have frozen water strategically placed to catch the breezes coming into the kennel/coop, also. It's only going to get hotter, but so far, so good! How is everyone else faring?
