The addition of the poop board was a game changer. We used scrap pieces of plywood and lined with Sweet PDZ, although now I save and dry coffee grounds to use instead. Scoop with cat litter scoop.

Have to say...you have motivated me to start drying our used coffee grounds. DH built a simple drying rack (window screen, (which didn't work too well, but will soon be covered with landscaping fabric)). I have PDZ on the poop board, but will add coffee grounds as they dry. It will take a while to have more coffee than PDZ, but I won't be spending $. Instead I will use, then repurpose coffee grounds.

I smooth it out with the litter scoop. I usually put a solid 1/2" layer. It makes scooping and smoothing much nicer.
