eating your pet open discussion

With her views on animals being pets and equal to humans, I'm surprised that she eats by products of animals...unless those animals were raised sustainably and humanely, she would be contributing to some of the most cruel treatment of animals there could be. Most commercial dairies are horrible to their cows. And in light of how she views animals, wouldn't that be much like milking a human who was lactating and drinking her milk?
I totally agree with all that your saying but people do make their own decisions and you can't change them. Pingu may be a vegetarian because of her views on animals or she may be a vegetarian because she believes it's healthier for her. Either way, nobody can force her to change her views (not saying you are trying to). I wish I had the strength to not eat meat or animal products but I've been raised eating it and I can't pass up some good steak.

Exactly the point I was trying to make. This whole thread is an attempt to make people feel guilty about eating their chickens by using the phrasing "eating your pet". As you've stated, people do make their own decisions and you can't change them and no one can force them to change their views, but the OP is trying to do that very thing by using the negative phrasing. Just using her own tactics on her in an attempt to show how utterly futile such a thing is and show it does nothing but create negative feelings amongst the members here. What's the point? Really? Why would someone want to even go there?

Just to lighten this debate up a friend of mine bought a calf and told the kids it's name was hamburger. Basically to remind what the cow was for. Well after raising it my friend was the one always feeding it and when it came time to butcher guess who had a hard time with it? Not the kids. lol

I love my vegetables and have even refused OT at work because I was eager to get my garden planted but I also love a nice cut of meat. Watch a true survival show sometime that actually puts people in a survival environment instead of just a game show. Basically people in the wild without modern conveniences with nothing more than the woods/jungle to survive. You can not find enough vegetable foods to survive and be able to consume enough calories to sustain yourself. It requires meat.

Sustainable is a funny word. Is it sustainable to buy vegean stuff that was trucked in to maintain a healthy diet? How much land would you need to grow the food you need without harming animals? Can you afford even the property taxes? An acre of good farm ground in my area is well over $10,000 an acre to buy it. Ever look at your plate and imagine how many plants it required to make that pile of peas on your plate? Ever have a bad year with your garden? Bugs? What kill them? The convenience of the store and how easy it is to get what you need blurs the line of sustainability.

My folks were vegan for over 15 yrs, started it in their early 60s, after a lifetime of eating normally. It did wonderful things for their physical health for a long, long time...but then they started having certain neurological and mental changes. It was too late for Dad before we discovered the problem and his is irreversible, but I've been trying to restore Mom's good mental health, memory and hearing loss with the use of good eggs and chicken raised here on the place, free of all the horrors of commercially raised meats. After all that time not eating animal products, it's been a chore to convince her how important it is now to get a balance back in her diet.

The problem? No B12 in their diet...and that can only be sourced through meat, dairy, eggs, etc. in the regular diet. Being continually low on B12 can cause symptoms of dementia, hearing loss, essential tremors, increased mood swings and irrational behavior, and other neurological changes. With men of a certain age quite often the prolonged deficiency causes permanent damage but it's a little different for women. They can often be restored to most of their faculties with daily B12 injections and a diet that is more balanced. We don't do the injections for my mother, as who wants to live out the rest of their lives taking shots each day if they don't have to? I make sure she gets the appropriate animal proteins in her diet and also encourage her to drink buttermilk to keep her small intestine healthy and producing B12 as well. Dad is very physically fit at 84, but now lives in a nursing home and cannot remember his wife of 64 yrs...before that he had to be involuntarily committed to a state mental facility where they had tried to give him massive doses of B12 to try and help his mental capacity, but to no avail.

It's been found that the "norms" of B12 levels reflected in blood values here in the states do not truly show deficiency in that area...the low reflected in the normal range is too low, especially in the elderly. Veganism sounds lovely and noble and it can often lead to a very healthy existence...for awhile.

Good point beekissed. Hard thing seeing loved one's "go down hill".

Another good point is to look at the design of the human body. We have canine teeth as well as incisors and molars. Comparing to wild animals their teeth say alot of what their natural diet is. Looking at that our diet should be about 2/3 vegetarians and 1/3 carnivore. According to our teeth. :p
