EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

He's saying don't candle because he is of the opinion it will introduce bacteria and harm the eggs. It won't if you're careful. ;)
It's a matter of great debate among those that hatch eggs. You have to come to your own decision eventually on whether or not to candle. I suggest candling anyway while you're learning what humidity levels to keep in your incubator.

What about it is confusing you? The air cell is at the blunt end of the egg.
Ah! I wondered if that was the concern. I work in neurodiagnostics and am meticulous when it comes to infection control. ;) that includes my babies!
This is sort of embarrassing but I can't tell what I'm looking for! lol I think one spot is an air cell then I'm not sure.

No, not really. There's a stream with crayfish in it on the other side of the house, several hundred feet away, but it's down a slope and most of it is thick forest. Didn't think they were that determined.

Settle down? Settle down? There was about a 2% chance of that at the very greatest.

Yes, you misheard. I'd never cackle.

Never, ever underestimate the determination of a crayfish! LOL!!!

From what I've seen of your efforts before, you certainly seem to be headed in the right direction. Good Luck!
I'm giving it my best shot, whites. I have formed a pretty darn good support group through the Rhode Island Red Club of America, and the president of the club (from whom I got my birds) is a phone call away. My goal is to make him proud he entrusted his hard work (aka: chickens) to me.

That's saying the least of it. He's got gorgeous birds.
Why thank you very much, Bubbles... err... Banty! I really like what I'm seeing in my chicks. I see a lot of flat backs and most of the males have the "brick" shape to their bodies that sets them apart from all other breeds. Here's a video of the youngest group of chicks:

Pics? It's a light area, it looks empty compared to the rest.

Gorgeous, solid birds. If I were still "shopping" for my main breed I'd be more than a little tempted by them.

It's one of the hardest breeds to get right. Not necessarily a good starter bird, but I've always loved a good challenge. Time will tell if I'm up to the task... :fl
I'm not too smart on the 'starting easy' front. If I were, I'd have picked white Chanteclers.
