EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Quote: Spring has officially spring here - everything has started budding out and turning green, so it's more "official" (less likely to have a late freeze, though "technically" we could have another one through mid March). It was such a nice day today. I like spring - it doesn't last long here...

Spring actually lasted an entire day in S. TX? Global warming must be real!

Hello there, first of all let me apologize in advance. Ive been trying-and I think I'm missing something. I've been trying to read and educate myself as much as possible before we set our eggs. I've been playing with our Ovation 28 Brinsea incubator for a couple days trying to get the humidity level 45% as instructed in the book before we put eggs in. I have used the factory settings, and the humidity still keeps saying it's at 65%. What I don't understand is on the settings through the menu and the manual it says that the humidity should be set at 20%, but the way I understand it the humidity should be 45%, so do I need to go in there and change it? I realize it's a British product, but the humidity percent should be the same figure either way. All of the factory settings are regulating normal and it seems to be working just fine except for the fact that the humidity is 65%. I did have water in there, about 1/2 a cup, and I took a lot of it out this morning. The vent is open all the way.
Help!
Have you had any luck in figuring this out?

Hello all.

Sorry I was gone for a couple days, it has been busy here. I have not read back and will not so every insult "certain Persons" threw my direction will go by me as complete misses.

I can see under my new hatching schedule Thursday will not be BYC days, Between Disinfecting eggs, and incubators, if I can get one empty to do it, setting eggs, candling eggs and moving chicks to brooders I just have no time for BYC. I thought I had 26 dozen eggs to set, but upon candling I found a bunch with hairline cracks from freezing.

I did not try to fix the eggs with anything. I just smashed them up shells and all, and fried them to feed back to the chickens.

My hatch this week was nerve wracking I only had one chick hatch on Thursday, 2 yesterday and the rest last night. My hatch was a little over 22 days. (this did not make my day less busy, I spend all day going back to check the hatch.)

My incubator these eggs came out of is about half a degree high, it is a wafer one and I have problems hitting the 99.5 right on the nose. I thought the hatch would be a tad early. However, the hatcher has a GQF electronic thermostat that is extremely touchy and it is 3/4 of a degree low. When I try to set it, it spikes to 101.5 or falls to 97.9. ( for those of you living in the Vast Wastelands of the North that is F not C).

I guess the 3/4 degree low in the end trumps the high temps at the beginning.

@Hawk12 Those look like little yokohamas, You have any of them?

101*C would be boiling the water in the humidity pans and flash frying the eggs, so I rather assumed it was Fahrenheit.

I lower temp at lockdown to 98.0*F from 100.5*F and I still have day 21 hatches, or in some cases, I even have early hatchers....

Banti, I tagged article editor on the link ChickenCanoe had posted, that link might be helpful here.
I think mel got it

Not really, I adjusted the RH from 20% on the factory settings to 45%. it just doesn't seem to want to stay anywhere constant. I add a little tiny bit of water and then it stays around 37-40% for a little bit but then it just goes all over the place. Right now it is at 29%.

@Pensmaster
  - guess what?! I got my roof fixed today (well, the flapping panel part). I had hired "Critter Control" because there were raccoons living in the walls of my house. They are a little pricey, but they are VERY good - they set traps, will come and deal with emptying them (and relocating the animals), resetting them, etc. for a few weeks, and they also do an evaluation to see how they're getting into the house and IMPORTANTLY, they will do repairs to block those spots up at a very reasonable cost - they are handyman-type repairs, but ones I can't do myself. Roof repair cost me $49. 9In the past, raccoons had torn a big hole in the side of my house at the attic level - they did an amazingly secure repair.)

Oh, and we've gotten 3 raccoons so far, including the main big male that I think was the one living in my house walls...

Awesome with the repairs. I hope none were trapped inside. I'd guess you'd know by now.
That is a very reasonable charge for the roof repair.
