EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Meanwhile, the other day I had a little disagreement with this buck about whose driveway this was, mine or his. He was disinclined to move (until I had my SUV about 5 feet from him, then he calmly sauntered off...).

You suppose he's the same one that was hanging around a while back, that you took the long-distance picture of?

I'm kinda ok on the rooster front, all are grown up and no fighting issues, but could do with fewer which would reduce the number of coops I need to maintain (some more jerky ones are on the hit list for after the holidays). My city came up with a new chicken ordinance recently which is REALLY reasonable (esp. compared to the previous one), and without a business license as a breeder I can have up to 50 chickens with a 10 to 1 ratio of hens to roosters (with a $25 permit per year - no permit needed for up to 8). No, I'm not in compliance, but I'm close, and fortunately, they are only enforcing it if there are nuisance complaints (e.g., like a barking dog complaint). I have a plan in my head if I had to suddenly comply - a number of boys would have to go. I've read the whole text of the ordinance, it's very appropriate re: housing requirements (down to roost space you have to provide per bird etc. - clearly focused on bird wellbeing), and a lot of it is targeted at thwarting potential cockfighting operations. (Local chicken people had a lot of input on it.)
That's why we moved way out in the country. The closer to our city the more regulations strangle you. We breed birds all spring & summer. Straight runs. City folk return the roos for free or 4 a discount on a pullet and we sell them twice. This last season got out of hand. It is in the rear view mirror now.
IT IS SO QUITE right now!
Even with screaming pigs... Roos are so disruptive of tranquility when in masses. I can't repeat myself enough saying how good it feels to have the farm fund replenished so we can too focus on well being of our keeper stock! amen..
Also very good to see you back posting with your friends that missed your company
@Fire Ant Farm.. Pleased to meet you..

You mean this fella form last year?

Just not sure - it's possible. There are just so many...

Seems I'm talking to myself again....I hate that we no longer have the box that lets us know at a glance who's on & who isn't. :barnie

I miss it as well. Good night!

SO glad all has settled down! I have a LOT of birds (and boys especially) for someone who is not a breeder and doesn't sell chickens, chicks or eggs. Fortunately, these boys are settled more and don't make much fuss. I certainly remember the pain of just ten grow-out cockerels who were coming into their testosterone - my teeth were on edge all the time. I can't imagine how you coped!

Nice to meet you as well. :)

OK, it's past my bed time (I gotta watch that - that was my problem with BYC before, kept me up.) Good night, all! :frow
