EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hey guys! Just wanted to share that I had an AWESOME hatch with my french black copper maran and EE's. All the FBCM have hatched except for two, one of which was either infertile or a very early quitter, and one who is currently pipped and chirping loudly! EE's and OE's were very similar. Over 90% hatch rate and very vigorous chicks! Will buy from this breeder again for sure!!! Thanks for all your advice too! I ran the incubators at 38C (just under 101F) and ran it dry (14-30% humidity depending on the weather) until day 19 when I ran the humidity up to 70%. I am so stoked! The breeder also threw in two "whoopsie" eggs that were from when he had to put his silkie hens in his FBCM pen, so I've got two silkie/FBCM crosses too- which I am stoked about! I hope they lay little chocolate eggs!! :wee:celebrate
You made out far better than I did. Out of 12 FBCM eggs, from a small hatchery "up the road" about 20 miles, only 4 hatched, & 2 of them had to be culled. There were 4 I didn't have a lot of hope for from the beginning, but I stuck with them anyway, just in case I was wrong. the remaining 4 looked good from the start, but here on day 23 have shown no sign of doing anything beyond just sitting there occupying space. I'll give them a couple more days. The 4 that hatched all came between day 19 & 21.
I'm not ready to say that the breeder sold me that many bad eggs; not yet, anyway. An incubator that was holding steady at 99*-100* for two days prior to introduction of eggs suddenly went bananas once the eggs were in, and I don't know why. For no more incubating than I do, I'm going to leave it to Mother Nature's incubators from here on out. Have 5 likely broody candidates out there right now....month-old Buff Orpingtons, 2 of which I'll keep, and save the Hova-bators as backup in case the hen quits.

That is so cool. Hope the last one makes it. I have replacement eggs coming from the gal I got the eggs from that shipping was so rough on. Extremely nice of them. Now I’ll be hatching in a non proven incubator which is really scary. Hopefully Brinsea will come through before the end of hatch.

As much as I like the dark eggs I really like seeing in the lighter ones when incubating. Hope the chicks that hatched do well for you.

I hope so, too; all both of them. $15 a pop is a bit salty for 3-day old chicks; at least for my pocketbook. I guess I'll have to put them in a wire dog crate 'til they can join the Buffs; out of coops/runs. I guess I could put the tractor back in service, after I repair it. Something strong enough to break chicken wire got in, for some reason, 'though it was obvious from the outside that there was nothing but air & grass inside. Strange part is, there was no such problem when I raised 4 mutts in it.

2 parts left to get for building my Frankenstein incubator.
There is a history already about where all the parts came from and thinking about writing an article or doing a thread on it's construction.

My geese really dislike when I wear bright red pants... and so do my silkie roosters. For some reason, red really disturbs them as a color. LOL

Also, one of my ducks bit me today because I wanted to hug her, but didn't have food, so she was a ninja and nipped me to tell me that I can't touch her unless I feed her.

And my goose I hatched named Lemonade is quite the little sweetie.

I’m with Banti! Spiders are evil!!
I kept feeling something tickling me. I thought it was just that I’m insane, but looked on the floor anyway after brushing at my leg. It was a spider. I think a wolf spider. I killed it, and then it happened... I saw my first spider veins. See?! I knew that last birthday was a mistake!! :hit

That is weird. And your right, cost of these chicks is a bit pricey. Incubator quitting didn’t help cost one bit. Not even two bits.
