Egg Bound Hen...I think...what to do!?!?!

Ok the vet opens at 9and I am planning on calling up there immediately. So I just checked on her and her tail is drooping but she won't sit down. If she was egg bound would she want to sit down? I don't know just a thought.

No, she likely would not want to sit down.

If she is not lethargic, you can try another warm epsom salts bath. If she is lethargic, it would be better to place her in a steamed up bathroom.

Keep her hydrated, if you have poultry vitamins like Poultry Nutri-Drench give her a direct dose of 1cc per 3lbs of weight. Also try to get some calcium into her, you can use 1/2tablet of human calcium like Caltrate or even a crushed up TUMS.

Ok I do have vitamins so I will start. She has no interest in eating or drinking so I can use a syringe. I feel like some of the mucous in her stool is froth from the lubricant. She seemed to really like the bath last night.

I noticed she seemed to be laying around the run a little more than usual today and I checked on her a few times. She had moved places and seemed to be the only chicken slightly panting off and on. Then when we let them out to free range she found a shady spot close to the run and just sat down. She will take a few steps and squat. She lays down and just closes her eyes. And doesn't seem to want to eat or drink...I did just try to check and I didn't feel anything.

Have you ever dewormed your flock?

Hopefully the vet will check her poop for you this morning. She may have a bacterial infection which would need antibiotics and only a vet can confirm or deny that.

Make sure it's not worms. One of my hens last year died from worms and all of her symptoms were egg bound but it turned out to be worms.

I was wondering if it could be worms. We have never dewormed our flock we just spinkle DE through the entire run and coop. To deworm can I treat with DE or something stronger??

DE will not do a thing for worms.

How is her crop feeling this morning? You can try checking again for a stuck egg inside her vent up to 2 inches. Soft or shell-less eggs can be hard to pass. Lash eggs from salpingitis can be stuck farther up. Collect some fresh droppings before you go to the vet. Is she showing any signs of molting with feather loss or looking a bit ratty? What were you using for coccidiosis? I would get some Valbazen or SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer to worm her later today. Valbazen dosage is 1/2 ml orally and repeat in 10 days. SafeGuard dosage is 1/4 ml per pound—1.25 ml for a 5 pound hen. Give it once and repeat in 10 days, or if you can, give it for 5 consecutive days to treat dangerous worms such as capillary worms.

Thanks so much!!! I just got back from driving an hour to the vet so I hope to get some answers!!!! She was looking pretty bad so fingers crossed!! Thank you soich for all the info!!!
