What type of bird , age and weight : Aracauna, 5 years, weighs less than usual
2) What is the behavior, exactly: droopy, walking with tail down and talking small steps, standing with eyes closed
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms? 1 week
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms? no
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma: No
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation: She's been acting droopy for the past week and I first checked if she had an egg stuck, and didn't feel anything. I checked today and I can feel two lumps, one right where the egg comes out, and one on her right side close to her back end
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all: scratch, crumble, some grass. her crop is full like normal
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? Runny, some has stuck to her feathers and I have been cleaning her off daily
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? 20 min in a warm bath, massaging her around the "egg hole" (don't know the proper term)
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? Treat myself
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use. Straw, but shes sleeping on a low wooden perch

I am really confused on what to do. My dad has saved several egg bound hens by sticking his finger into the hole, breaking the egg and pulling the shell and liquids out, then rinsing the hole out. I read on another website that you're not supposed to break the egg/stick your finger in the hole because you could injure the bird further and cause infection. I don't want to do anything that might hurt her more. Any suggestions? I can feel a big lump in her back end, that's why I think there is more than 1 egg stuck.

"bump"

The chicken is sleeping hunched over and with her head under her wing. Her tail is still droopy. I don't think the warm bath and massage helped at all

I see no one has helped you. Have you felt her to see if it feels hot where the lumps are? That might indicate infection. All I can say is I had good luck once when my Americauna got shell stuck inside her vent. she was pushing to get it out but wouldn't come out and I was afraid the pieces would hurt her or get infected. I tried the method they suggest of putting her in a bath of warm water. she would have nothing to do with that. So I filled a large syringe (no needle) with warm water mixed with a little mineral oil. Put on gloves, had DH hold towel over her head, tested warmth on my wrist like you would for a baby to make sure it was "warm", and injected her vent with it. Her vent relaxed and she began to push and sure enough, the shell came out little by little with the lubrication from the oil. I put my gloved finger up to help move some of the shell out. She did very well after that and laid more eggs. First time I'd ever done an "enema" on a chicken

I hope someone else with more knowledge will be able to help you with this problem. Please keep us posted on how she is.

Hi wild prime. I have this problem now. Feels like she has multiple eggs stuck. Were you able to help your hen?
