Egg broke inside first-time layer! *Update- egg bound!

She's so close. Just a matter of time. If you leave her to her solitude, she will slip into a laying trance, relax, and when she feels the timing is right, she'll stand and the egg should slip out.

Try to resist the urge to stand around and watch.

The egg has been in the same place since last night. She cries in pain any time she tries to push it out. :( I'm trying to sit back and be patient but it's so hard watching her struggle.

If she has been like that for such a long time, I would be lubing her vent and trying to work it out with fingers. Vets do remove stuck eggs, but most sources say not to do this yourself. However, it can be hard to watch, I am sure. I wonder about making a small hole into the egg and using a bulb or ear syringe, or turkey baster to "suck out the egg contents." I am not suggesting that you do that, but just thinking out loud. Do you have a vet who might help?

Kind of an overshare, but I'm just thinking from my own birthing experience, they often use a lubricant to do as Eggcessive suggests, and stretch the area to allow the baby to exit. I might be inclined to try that in this situation, although I'm very new to chickens, but it did work to use a well lubricated finger to gently rub around the opening to stretch the tissue slowly. I'd also warm the lubricant/ oil in some warm water before applying to the area.

Yes, I've been doing this. Lubing all around the egg and trying to gently stretch things to help it pass. I read the inner lining can start to dry out and make the egg stick so I've been trying to get some around the egg as much as possible. She's in a warm bath again.

Here's a video, very well done, by someone who had the same situation you have. You may be able to get some ideas. I'm sure you will identify with the tense tone. Spoiler alert: happy ending.

That was worth watching for me. She also has the UPDATE video on there and all in all is over 30 minutes to watch both. Quite an ordeal.
