I have some anbesol I can use & neosporin as well as rubber gloves & eye protection.
What would you recommend for suture? Do I need to go to the vet and buy some or you think some cotton/poly sewing thread would work just as well?

Also, what is penng?

Thanks,
Robin

I've sewn up many hens with plain old needle and thread - and no need to remove stitches later they will eventually disintegrate on their own. But, if you want something that is easier to sew with then ask your vet for a set of pre-threaded needle/sutures - the dissolvable kind. The cutting needle makes stitching through tough skin so easy and the sutures just slide through whereas needle and thread are harder to work with.

I too would make an incision, small at first, and see what you are dealing with. Then, I would remove it - making the insicision as long as necessary to get out whatever it is. As was suggested, just rinse the wound well, pack with Neosporin (regular kind) and sew her up. She should be fine.

Sounds good. Honestly though, I'm tempted to just slice the entire thing off than try to squeeze it out through an incision. I think the overall cut would be smaller. It really is the size of an egg and I can put my fingers together behind it (next to her leg).
My husband will be my helper and he's not too keen on having to perform chicken surgery, but he'll follow my lead.
I may need a third person to take the pictures.

How long has it been there? Time is a consideration when wondering what it is. It also may have a vascular connection underneath so be VERY CAREFUL! You have to be good enough to tie off bleeders well or she could die. I should mention I was a certified technician for many years prior to becoming a behaviorist . However, I am not experienced in chicken medicine as much as small animals. I would love to see it and I bet your local vet would too. Vet bills are often an issue (just spent $6,000 in the last 2 months on 2 dogs

) so we have pet insurance! It has paid back more than it cost us in the last 3 years.

FYI--Since I don't know whats in Anbesol I read on this site that any anesthetic with "cain" (novacaine, kidcaine, etc.) in the name should not be used on chickens!
Good luck and let us know!

Good luck with your chickie surgery! Lets see pics when your done!

If I had to guess, I'd have to say it's been there at least a month. We don't really handle our chickens. We only really touch them when they don't roost where they are supposed to and we have to catch them so they don't get eaten by raccoons/coyotes/dogs. That's when I really noticed this "thing" on her leg. I am pretty sure she hasn't looked 'even' for at least a month though.

I will definitely double check that it feels like there is only skin before I cut. I may end up just leaving it alone since it doesn't seem to bother her.

Wait a sec - I don't think you should use Anbesol...I could be wrong, but I feel like I've read that the numbing agent can be fatal to chickens.....

(I sent dlhunicorn a note asking here & will post her reply when rec'd.)

I'm not going to do anything tonight, so I'll just plan on waiting until everyone has exhausted their resources and are waiting with baited breath.
I don't think my hubby is crazy about me doing this at all since I'm 36 weeks preggo.
