It is our first winter with a flock of 28 hens. We have had very little egg production. About 1-3 eggs a day. Wondering what is causing this, as we expected more with this many hens. Thank you!
 
Have you added supplemental lighting? How old are the chickens? If they were hatched last spring, you should be getting a great supply. If they are 1 1/2 years old or older, such hens slow down big time in the winter. Chickens are photo reactive. We're down to 8 hours of daylight here. Pretty dark.
 
Depends on the breed, really. Most breeds tend to slow down with laying through winter and molting.
And most also show some sort of decline in production as they grow older. Things should start to speed up when the weather gets warmer!
