This is horrible. We have had so much flooding in Iowa this year, I wonder if they are infected from the water. I wonder how you test your flock for salmonella. Anyone have any ideas? I am thankful I don't have to buy store eggs.

And this is why i have hens..........................

Of course you can have outbreaks in other stuff but wooooshhh!!!

Ok. Read the link. How do we know, as back yard chicken raisers, that we aren't passing along salmonella? My egg of choice is soft yolk. I'm not worried, but if someone should ask when they buy my eggs.

This is exactly why I decided that it was time for my own chickens, that and the fact that kids are now getting a chest much eailer from the hormones they give those meat birds, and my own garden. I want to know what is going on with my food as much as possible.

Now if only my hens would start laying!!!!

OK- the article says the bacteria can be harbored inside the chickens ovaries- so how does the chicken get it to begin with?

I'd like to know that myself!! I found the article a good read, but how did the chicken get salmonella inside her to pass on to the egg? What can I do to protect myself and my chickie girls?
