Egg Swiping at Shows

I gotta say, I've done some things I'm not proud of. I've been to fairs all my life and I've never see eggs in the cages. Of course, before now i wasn't really looking

Gotta say though, knowing my own past, I would probably have done the same thing.
Glad you enjoyed your Bandit, Bandit

Interesting post subject. I have a question what if the person that had the egg stolen had stolen an egg or did some other questionable act to get where they were at with respect to thier birds? would that be stealing or justice? Confessions are usually done to set ones' mind and spirit at ease or in this case subject matter for chicken chat I'm not sure which. As far as myself when I got up this morning I did not intend to steal anything and tonite as I type I can't recall stealing anything today but tomorrow I may steal something I am capable but if I do I know I will be forgiven and if I am forgiven I probably won't remember it in 25 years which sounds like a good round number. I generally avoid shows like they plague...because they might have the plague.

We did go to the County Fair a couple of years ago and there was a fellow there overseeing the poultry barn. I watched him remove several eggs from cages and set them off to the side, and I remember feeling very indignant, as though he ought to leave them alone unless they were his birds...it may have just been policy.

You could have a little fun with it... Put a mutt egg in your chickens cage!!!! ha ha ha... Yolks on them... I would.... if there was a theif in the midst.. I would put several different colored eggs in there so the person wouldn't know which is the egg from the hen.... Then at hatch time... they still wouldn't know.. Nice huh??? Or give you chicken antibiotics... or crossbreed her befoer the show.. that'll teach em.. I have lots of ways I would love to mess with egg thieves.. I once froze em and left them behind.. I bet that was a mess in the bator!!! ha ha.

At our fair, the eggs are collected by the exhibitors and poultry superintendents and displayed with the breed and variety of the bird who laid the egg written on the egg. At the end of the day, all eggs collected that day are taken to the local soup kitchen to help feed those in need. To me, that's a lot better option than the show staff either destroying the eggs or auctioning them off.

Most experienced exhibitors know that there isn't much to most of the eggs laid at a show, it is mostly rookies that drool over those eggs.
If you want those eggs then just stay after the coop out and help tear down the show, you can have all the eggs you find. There are quite a few.

Very well said.

I attend a lot of shows. When I find an egg, I either leave it or take it to the show committee and they place them in egg cartons to be destroyed at the end of the show. If I know who's egg it is, I'll tell the show committee and they can choose to set that egg aside for the owner.

Many show birds have not been exposed to the breeding pen because they have been in conditioning pens. This isn't always the case but for the serious show birds, I would tend to bet that most of the eggs are infertile.

The unauthorized taking of eggs happens a lot. It is stealing in my opinion. I generally stick very close to my birds and if anyone lays an egg, I pull it out right away.

Egg stealing at shows is Stupid,

Mostly Dumb people trying to hatch out SQ chickens & are probably not going show anyways.

The eggs stollen are most likely not going to hatch 100% of the time anyways.

Due to the fact that most exhibitors, separate roosters and hens in individual pens weeksor months before a show.
So these dummies are most likey stealing duds

I'm not going to pass any judgement, but putting your hands in someone's cage is not allowed at shows. Only the judge or the show super/secretary should have access to a bird that is not their own.

Yes, most eggs are not fertile and big APA shows. I have even seen some exhibitors grab eggs from their own pens and shake the heck out of the egg and return it to the cage.

I've only shown my birds once (thus far) and I had mine separated MONTHS before we went to keep their condition up--so their eggs wouldn't have been fertile anyway...that said, I'd NEVER steal eggs at show (or anywhere else)...but I'm glad you learned your lesson!
