Egg Swiping at Shows

I keep reading this thread and I think I somewhat understand, but I feel that if you take something that is not yours it is stealing no matter how you look at it. I am not trying to appear judgemental about this at all because I myself have done things that are wrong or consider a sin most likely daily but your post seem to be asking if it is alright.

As I said in an earlier post (which is easy to miss), this was 25+ years ago. At this point it was/is for the sake of a discussion more than it was a confession. One good reason to remove eggs is that I have seen more than one hen covered with egg. No doubt stressed out and they either trample and break them and/or try to eat them. I saw one white Silkie hen that had her beak and crest all covered with egg yolk. In stiff competition that has to count against them as how do you judge a sticky, matted down crest?

I once opened a cage and got a broken egg out that the hen had trampled and begun to eat. I put it in a napkin and gave it to the breeder and apologized for getting in the cage without permission. They didn't mind though because I had a good reason for doing so.

There is little that can be done for events that have passed. Obviously, the OP has seen guilt for the poor choices made and that is that. As it has been stated numberous times, stealing eggs is wrong. And though it doesn't make this act commendable, it's at least slightly better that Redcatcher didn't show or breed the bird in question.

Redcatcher, what's done is done. I'm still glad you made this thread. It's proved to be quite interesting.

There are a few diseases that pass through the eggs. Most do not. I do not think that hatching an egg taken from a show is any riskier than purchasing hatching eggs or chicks or adult birds.

I know this is a bit off topic. But which diseases can be passed through the egg to chick..

Thank you

We saw a few eggs when we went to the stock show but I never considered taking one...

That would mean opening the cage and risking the (prize winning) bird getting out...

Not to mention I'd feel like a total heel for taking it... for all I know this bird was the only surviving member of the flock after a dog attack and they needed that egg to rebuild. Nope, it'd drive me nuts... the downside of all those years of Quest classes...

It was the type of show cage that had the door that slides up and down, no hinges. I just slid my hand in under the bottom of the door. No chance of the chicken escaping as it was just high enough for my hand.

Ohhh like a bird cage... I mean... NOT chicken... like parrot bird cage...

That would lay off the escape guilt... but my tangent thinking brain would just have to consider the reasons they NEEDED that egg.

I am such an overthinking goob.

I have seen both types of cages at shows. The kind with the door the slides up and down and the other kind with the door that opens to the side with hinges and a latch...Generally the smaller cages.
