Exactly my thoughts....have read about it happening before.Um... is it possible it's a ceramic egg? Did you put any fakes in your next box? Some of them look insanely real, but when you "crack" it open it's a thick shell and otherwise empty.

That's probably the one I was remembering...we all, including the OP, had quite the chuckles!!Someone posted just such an occurrence some time ago. They had collected a ceramic egg out of the nest, and fought their way into it, only to find it empty. We had a lot of fun with that situation!
I've collected my fakes after the pencil lines wear off, but have never tried to crack one or sell one, usually catch them in the coop when I count the fakes(6) after collecting every night.I have ceramic eggs, and have read on here that some are hollow inside. I have never broke any of mine.
I don't mistakenly collect my fakes, because I bought white fakes. All my girls lay brown eggs. GC
