Egg too small, duckling pipped, struggling to breathe, no noise, day 28 - pic attached

Pics
I got him out, but left him in the bottom of the shell. He still has yolk to absorb. This is day 30. How can that be? No doubt about the date. I write it on the eggs.

The membrane was only stuck to him at one edge on the bottom. It came apart pretty easily. Also, no blood!! I was very worried about that

I put him in a cup, keeping his bum in the bottom of the shell. Here are pictures. His foot was on top of his head, so one foot is out too
Oh my goodness he is really slow
It’s been more then 48 hours since internal pip
If that yolk dries out he will struggle to survive
Can you place him back in the bottom of the shell or did you break it to much ? The shell can keep it safe from the air flow in the bator.
How big is that yolk. The one picture looks like it’s pretty big but pictures are hard to tell

I forgot to say it’s like babies sometimes they come a little early or late. The ones my duck sat on were day 30 and the ones I incubated were day 26&27
One on day 28
Could be due to temps to low or humidity to high.
I would leave humidity a bit higher for now as he needs to absorb and you don’t want it to dry in there
He sure is adorable !!

Thanks 😁 i was a bit puzzled, but that makes complete sense. Ugh! We bought a starter incubator. We only planned on this one hatching so we didn't want to invested several hundred dollars. When it failed miserably at controlling the environment I hit the workshop and built them an environment. I justified the expense by telling myself I'll grow something edible in it next winter. 😉. Once they moved in they have been at the correct temp and humidity, but they did have a rough start

He's hanging out with his bum still in the bottom of the shell. He's prepped up in a silicone measuring cup packed in paper towels. I have the yolk somewhat protected under the paper towels. I'm not sure how big it is, but I can't really see it anymore. Not because he absorbed it. It's just under a "cap" now. I was nervous that he might puncture it do I have it a little protection. It's not that big. His bum takes up most of the bottom of the egg. The yolk is to one side. He has one leg out because it was on top of his head in the egg. He doesn't seem to be able to get leverage to use it to push though. His head and neck move in the cup, but his bum stays put. At least so far.

If he wriggles his way out of the position he's in I'll see if I can take a look, and maybe even a picture

I've been thinking about y your message I may be in trouble with the yolk. It's not in a great position. Can I drop a drop off water on it every so often?

@WVduckchick
Maybe able to answer this better
I wouldn’t put why water on it unless she says it’s okay
You should be able to look every few hours and see if the yolk is going down
If you do have to help another one try to leave more shell. Only take the cap off once you see Babies head if they need help you can gently pull it out then look down inside for yolk. This way they have more protection with a bigger bottom shell.
Make sure the paper towel doesn’t touch it directly. That yolk will be very delicate so don’t touch it at all.

I agree with the others on the late hatch, your temp was probably a bit low. I’ve had ducklings hatch on day 33 though, so it’s possible.
The one picture does look like quite a bit of yolk left. What you are doing is good, hopefully he will continue to absorb and not get too rambunctious and try to move around too much.

I don’t think I’d put anything directly on the sac yet. You might need to later, to moisten it if he starts trying to move around too much. Key is to not let him bust it open.

Sure is a cute little fella!

Agreed, hope all goes well with the little guy!
He may be tinier in size and weaker if he manages to make it which I know he will!so there’s nothing to worry about if he’s like that because mine was much tinier than my normal hatch.

I wanted to send an update. The yolk receded, but I waited until this morning before touching him. There is still something there, but I don't know if it the last of the yolk or another problem. I'm not sure what the yellow is attached to his bottom, but it's not bleeding or leaking. He has no problem pooping because I found that in the bottom of the shell too. There was some shell stuck to him but we got it off. Is there anything that will take the bit of residue off?

That’s still yolk he needs to finish
I would keep that from getting dried out
Could take another few hours yet.
