Egg trying to zip...Update~He may just make it!

Bad news... it has a yellow mass on it's shoulder... It's still alive ( I had to remove the other chicks from the bator and move them to their brooder... I don't think it's going to make it.

I had one hatch with a bubble on the side of its neck that laid on its shoulder. It bubbled and gurgled and died in my hands. I have no clue what caused it.

Definately on it's shoulder... he's still breathing, wet, and chirping. DH and I are really nervous. Maybe it was too big for the shell and it's a mass from rubbing or something? I don't know this is all new to me!

You know, my last little bantam cochin had what appeared to be a small blister on his right shoulder. I finally figured out that this was actually his crop that just had some fluid in it. Perhaps these chicks are swallowing a bunch of fluid and overfilling their crops.

Thoughts??

That could be, the bump has shrunk, and the chick is now in it's own little "bassinet" in the brooder. It's not walking around just kind of laying around breathing like it would if it just hatched. I dunno... we'll see what tonight brings. The goop from the shell is a little caked on so he looks like he has way too much hair gel in!

These chicks today have really made me glad my last hatch is on the 12th (for now

)!

I'm going to say a little prayer tonight in hopes that the crossbeak has an uneventful life, and this little one makes a miraculous recovery! I think we were bestowed some special birds today!

I have found that when one is bubbling, its only a very short time he will live because hes drowning in fluid. Most that Ive found have done absorbed the yolk also. Everything looks ok but they will die (drown) soon. The last one I had like this, I thought I found him early, however I was doing something else and put him off for a few minutes and when I got him out he was dead.

So when they bubble its ASAP for me next time!

To my surprise I woke up in the middle of the night (several times to check it) and once it was standing (or trying to stand). So I dipped it's beak in some water and it drank. It's actually in the brooder with its hatch mates now! It's not out of the woods yet but it certainly is doing a heck of a lot better since yesterday...

So this is my conclusion: Since these were shipped eggs, I'm thinking this chick had a floating air sac. One that was filled with fluid. Once it miraculously pipped it started to drown. I think I got to it just in time! The fluid drained from the mass on the shoulder (crop maybe?) and now it's regaining strength from fighting to breath when zipping the egg.

sorry the pictures are a little blurry...

Phew what a hatch! I'm glad this batch is mostly over... I am on day 23 and have several left in the bator but think it may be a lost cause.
