Eggs failing to complete hatching or chicks dying shortly thereafter.

I have pigeons and recently have had two related pairs that have incubated chicks to the point of hatching to include beginning to break out of the shell, one did. They both died within 24 hrs. The hatched chick did not appear to be fed. The same thing happened with the other pair. I examined them for paratyphoid but found no symptoms. Both pairs are active, have good appetites and appear to be very healthy. What would cause this to happen?
