Eggtopsy: What happened to my egg? {Graphic Pictures}

Don't feel too bad, many of us have done the same thing. Sad, but just a part of incubating.

Are you positive on day 30? I ask, because many start counting day 1 when set, but day 1 doesn't actually start until 24 hours after setting. Also, 28 is a guideline....some ducks can take longer or hatch quicker. What breed is it?

Did you have any kind of power outage or were temps low throughout incubation?

Did you remove the entire air cell? Much of the internal membrane? Did it bleed much?

It's whole are cell is gone I have a pic.

Definitely on day 30 , didn't start counting till the next day , it's still alive not making any noise but opening and closing it bill, no power outage but was in a homade incubator.

The only part u can't see, that I just found out about due to waking inside and finding my kids holding it saying mom is making noise (noise is new) is the only veins I can see at two, big ones, I now have it back in the incubator with the door locked. No one can get in except me.

I'm guessing your temps may have been a little low.

Personally, I'd wipe a little Vaseline on that membrane, keep it from drying out, and just wait. It looks very moist inside the membrane around the duckling, like it just needs some more time. The little devil might surprise you and hatch!

Good luck! :fl

I hope so, sorry it wasn't showing a notification, all I have is potroleum jelly so I used that and I found out duck eggs seem to have three membranes, the shell membrane, the outer membrane to the air cell and another one literally engulfing it's veins. I have touched it sense my kids had it but when it squacked I cried because it's very much alive. I had 9 eggs the mom abandoned because she couldn't hide them from the kids last month and out of 9 this is the only to make it.

It was with a catch of 2 chicken eggs, one hatched and is very much alive and loves humans and the second had half of its head missing and an eye missing. I'm very much attached to my animals so I was really upset when I thought it was dead this morning and when I saw its bill move I was mortified. I don't want to kill it I hope I didn't

Ah! If they were with a broody and your kids happened to run her off the nest sometimes, that could explain the delay in hatching.

It's tough, but I have a funny feeling this one just might make it! :fl

Another thought, I see one dark vein across the top. Once it seems like it has dried up, I would consider peeling that membrane completely away, and moisten around the opening. I had one start to turn and got caught behind the membrane and couldn't bust thru it, and it smothered. So just keep it in mind once it gets a little more active. :)

Just ended my hatch with one surviver (granted I only had three to start) but it looks like one was malpositioned (it also has scissor beak) and looks like another dies around day 18. This one always looked too small for the egg. My thought is maybe it didn't lose enough moisture. I dry incubated, but it is a maran egg, so may have just not been poured enough.

I keep having chicks die around day 17-18

4 of 12 eggsh hatched and are healthy.
One hatched on day 20
two on day 21
and one early on day 22

I am using a modified incubator with a turner and an digital temperature control and a computer fan for circulation.

I don't currently have an automatic means of controlling humidity. But the air sacs were about the right size on day 7/14/18 if anything they might have been a little small.
At lockdown I did everything I could to keep the humidity over 50% I only opened the incubator late on day 21 to take the chicks out.

This is what the chick looked like when I opened up one of the eggs.

Right by my thumb you can just see the beak but it never broke through the membrane.

Any Ideas or suggestions.
This is the second hatch I have had trouble with, and have lost 3/4 of the eggs when at this stage.

I have a data log on the incubator that I am going to try and download and see if it shows any anomalies. I will try and post it when I download it.

Thanks.

Apparently my arduino didn't save all the data to the memory card.
Here are some more of the eggs that did not hatch.
All were a little different most were fully developed.

Chick1
The beak was just visible at the top of picture in the air cell. It didn't look like it had broken into the air cell.

Chick2
Looks like it broke through into the air cell. but no pipping of the shell.

Chick3
Kind of gross. Less developed, smaller a little stinky, runny yolk dribbled out of the egg.

Chick4
Seemed like it was backward in the shell and might have tried to get out with the air cell at the opposite end.

Any Ideas? only 4 out of 12 hatched.
