Eggtopsy: What happened to my egg? {Graphic Pictures}

In my opinion, A little low temps in the last few days won't kill them. Think of a broody getting off eggs in the winter time. Fluctuations in a controlled environment are not good, but brief ones don't do as much damage as we might think.

Try starting with your humidity very low (25-30ish) and check air cells around day 7-10. If they look too large, add some water. Its easier to adjust that direction, as opposed to trying to remove water if the air cells are too small.

It's a homemade incubator too so it's not easy to quickly adjust the temp. I might just get the eco brinsea mini to try again - something easier.

I'm very upset but a lot of lesson learned here for me.

Do you not have enough heating element to bring it up quicker?? Just wondering?

We all had to learn. I can recall way back to my beginning----I was about ready to quit incubating----even bought more hatching hens----If we are willing to learn and Follow good advice from Good hatchers Only----we should improve our hatches.

No it didn't cross my mind to use another heating element to bring it up quicker. I had a styrofoam w/ plugs, so I just put some plugs back in. But you made me think I could have used a heating pad for that...and also used less expensive eggs first time around.

I'm going to pick up a few chicks but I'll try hatching again. Think I can really get addicted to hatching...it's freaky and cool watching the eggs develop into baby chicks.

Styrofoams have to be used in a area that stays some what warm---if the room get to cool they can not keep up. Also if you have a egg turner and remove it for the hatch----you might have to tweek the thermostat a little because of loosing the heat from the turner motor. You should not plug up your vent holes because eggs need a little fresh air to survive. There is many ways to keep the heat up if the area/room is cool---one easy one is putting the incubator in a small room and running a small thermostat controlled heater to keep the room in the 70's. You can use a heating pad on probably low----laying in the bottom of a box some bigger than your incubator with the top of the box some opened so the eggs can breath. I would not lay the incubator on the heating pad---maybe on a cooling type rack or similar above the heating pad.

My first time trying to catch chicks ..I thought I was doing it right 10 eggs , but at day 24 nothing had happened . I candled all of them and saw nothing I finally put them in baggies and cracked them open ...most of them just had yellow yolks some of them had just a ball of black inky ick and one had a half formed chick. Soooo depressing!!!!

It sure can be!!! If you want to try and hatch some more----choose someone that Is Good at it and Willing to help you from start to hatch---do it private message so you do not get conflicting opinions. Keep in mind--It is hard to help some times if the person has started all wrong.

Really?!? You usually give great advice, but i have to disagree with this. I mean yes, i agree conflicting information is bad, but how do you choose who to listen to, to send a private message?? What if the person they choose is one of the idiots that give bad information? Then it just stays bad!!

start a new thread, and decide who's advice you want to follow. Then if you want to take it to private messages, fine.

I was thinking-----They need to do their home-work before deciding whom to ask for help, not just grab someone---that's Why I said---Choose Someone that is Good. Sure if they do not want to go to the trouble to do a back search----they better start a thread and ask opinions from the ones that have been around a long time. You did like my last sentence didn't you???
