Egyptian Fayoumis Thread!

Thanks so much for your help! We had a "feeling" that's what he was. Have just been waiting to hear him start crowing to be sure :)

I just got an Egyptian Fayoumi pullet, only 1.5 weeks old =) She is SO sweet! People have suggested naming her Cleopatra. I think it suites her. Now, is it possible to show her? I just read they are not recognized by APA?

She is adorable!

I don't know anything about showing...you might go over to the breeds genetics and showing section of BYC and start a thread about it- that is what I too have read on internet about the APA (here is one place: http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/catalog/chickens.html
scroll down for EF

I think they can't be shown when they aren't recognized by the APA, unless there is a breed club applying for recognition, but I could be mistaken. Is there a breed club?

I have a few questions for anyone here who has bred these or is planning to. Are there traits you are selecting for? I wondered about trying to select for egg size, bird size, cold hardiness. I also wondered whether there were superficial characteristics (as in, color) that are preferable where they are recognized. I noticed i have one cockerel who is quite a bit whiter in the neck and shoulders than the others, and he is also a bit larger. Whether this means he is maturing faster or not I don't know yet. Mine will be 7 weeks old Monday.

Thanks :)

My Egyptian Fayoumis...

She is bigger and more feathered now, but she is fairly hard to get pictures of. Are they bantams? We got them out of a pullet bin, so I assumed they were standard sized because they were sexed.

Pretty! They are standard size chickens- I have read the hens get to 3.5 lb and the roos to 4.5 lb.

Mine should start laying here soon and I will be so thrilled.

I had a batch of 50 surprise breed chicks and 4 of them are this breed. I didn't know what breed it was until someone on another thread told me. This breed is new to me, so I have to research all about them.
