My DH would have a FIT if I used our crock pot as an incubator!! And he'd NEVER eat food cooked in it again no matter how well it's been cleaned and sanitized.
He already calls our bator a cooker...

Very interesting - I'd be interested to hear more on the skillet and crock pot bators from those that have used and had successful hatches.

I've had the bator going all week with the no slip liner in there and no problems. If you think about it people sterilize lots of plastic things by putting them in boiling water and water boils at a higher temp.

For humidity I'm using a shot glass at the moment. When it comes to hatch time and I put them into the egg cartons I plan to use the egg idea. Without the carton it would be hard to prop the egg up but, the shot glass opening isn't any bigger than what an egg fully opened would be.

Speckledhen-you really have it bad!

newdock-a crockpot? I checked mine and the lowest temp was to high.

I don't think they will have to worry about their feet but, that is a neat thought!

I think I am going to try this out. I have a batch due on Monday/Tuesday and I need to separate them from the others. I have a skillet, but it doesn't have a clear top. I am now rummaging through my kitchen and I am sure my family thinks I am nuts.

I have a George Foreman adapter that allows a great variance between off and warm, so this will be great to adjust the right temp. With my digital thermometer/hygrometer this should be interesting.

OH!!!!! That is such a cool idea! My hubby all ready thought I was a little nuts, what will he think now!!

I will be checking the second hand store tomorrow! My skillet lid isnt clear either but my crockpot lid is! HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Besides this way he wont have to spring for a bator!! PLEASE! Keep us posted on your sucess!

No I think this is cool. After all, I would only need it for this upcoming batch. I mean I just can't justify buying a bator for only one use. My other half thought it was a great idea after I explained it so we will see how this goes. Now, I just need to find a clear lid that will fit.

Although, what I might do is try to place a larger pot on top of the skillet surface and monitor the temperature throughout the day and if I can maintain what I need it at, then they are going in tonight. I will let you all know how this works out too.
