Maybe you could make a mash for him out of his regular food? Drip a little into his beak so he knows to eat it. I had a goose with a beak that was broken top and bottom...it was a long road but she did recover. Good luck! Terri O--with her share of Handi-quacks (love that!)
Shadow, that is terrible, hope he gets his appetite back! Maybe you could crop feed him? Bemba your duck is soooo cute with those keets, she looks so proud, if she made it I think he can too
But I did see Bill eat and drink this morning. Did have some difficulty and wasn't too sure if he could do it, but he did. I put some yogurt and grapes in the feed bowl this morning mixed with Brewers Yeast and the regular feed.
For what it's worth--I visited a farm recently with a small flock of Blue Swedish, and among them is one with essentially no bill--just the stub against the face. She apparently lost her bill to a predator, but she does fine--you wouldn't even notice there's anything wrong with her if it weren't in the middle of her face! She acts totally normal. So there's really good hope that yours will be just fine. Good luck!
have you tried using superglue to help glue it together and support the injured bill? It can be used to seal small wounds and cuts from surgeries in chickens.
Caution with superglue! It works very well... but it can also be destructive if you are messy with it. Make certain it doesn't seep through into the mouth. The best way to do it is to get plastic mesh, lay it on top of the bill (small square, size of the area), then superglue that down on top of it on both sides of the break. Eventually, it will wear off and the break may have sealed back up (no guarantees). Its effectively a cast. Thats what you do with broken turtle shells as well, works really well. It'll require 2 people, one to hold it in place (including the duck, so maybe 3 ppl) and the other to apply it.
The duck is doing fine, the bill still wiggles a little when he eats but other than that he's happy as can be. It seems to have started healing over too.
