Emergency...Chickens need help, food, water, electric lines down...

oh and one more thing Electricity will reach out and grab you if you get within it's field. You don't have to be touching it so stay far away. you can be killed by primary , secendary and house service lines.

Def. start calling the news and the city and complaining that livestock are dying if something is not done.

We bought a small generator in the off season. My inlaws next door have a big one. But we don't have snow. We have ours for hurricanes. Def. worth the investment!

Hope you get through this ok!

I have large chicken houses and then some smaller coops and ALL have outside access I do not lock my chickens in small spaces they come and go outside and inside when they want to.

The houses are about the size of a large master bed room then they have large runs and the coops and runs house about 3-5 chickens depending on size of the chickens which are small bantams. I have only seen my turkeys outside in the run I have not seen any chickens come out even if I call them but I do hear singing and humming from the orpington house.

Theres no windows but there is places where there is a wire mash boarded into it for light and air flow into the houses

I am so sorry to hear about this tragedy. My heart is breaking here in NJ for you and your animals. Please keep yourself safe!!

Dont you rescue farm animals?? There has got to be someone you know in the rescue/animal circle that can get a group together to fight this and get this taken care of QUICKLY. Sometimes animal people are the best ones to have on your side. The squeaky wheel usually gets the oil. This problem has gone on for too long already.

On a more morbid note, I'm sorry to even ask this, if the lines are laying across the chicken houses, what is the chance that the chickens have not already been electrocuted? You say you saw turkeys out in the run, is the wire across their house as well?

I am sending best wishes your way for a speedy fix to your problems.

Do as others have told you and contact the news ASAP Let them know you have animals dying there. The more people that are speaking out about this, the better chance you have of a resolution.

I think we all need to start calling Howell-Oregon Electric Coop!!! That could be thousands of calls coming in for them to get to your property.

I live in Howell county. Went to HOE coop on 63 north of West Plains a few days ago to report lines down in front of the property.

I spoke to one of the guys there and he told me it could be NEXT FRIDAY before power gets restored to some people.

This is not acceptable! Downed lines that involves possible death of anyone or anything should be a priority!!

Let's remember something. Animals are more resiliant than humans. I have a couple of friends with Ameron UE who went with a crew over five hours to help restore electricity. They cannot just go in the middle of a power system, put the wire up and you have power. They have to start with power to the substations and getting the power lines up from the New Madrid plants and other electric utilities to those substations. Once that is done then the wires to different parts of the area must be restored. Unfortunately, the lines which carry the most customers are often times done first so more people get help earlier.

That area just had so much damage that removing all the downed tree and power poles and putting up new poles and lines takes times. There is no rushing electricity, it's too dangerous. As for the downed line over the chicken house, do avoid it, but chances are there is no power to it. That does not mean to get near it.

Remember there could be people on ventilators and other medical supplies who need power too.

I'm not saying they need to drop everything to restore power here...Isn't there anyway possible they can get out there to just remove this wire or find out if it is in fact a live wire? The last 5 days could have been prevented if someone came out to determine this. Once the power line is removed, or deemed dead, someone could at least get in there safely. They could always come back at their convenience to restore the power.

If there is snow or meltwater in the run or drifted into the coop, they are unlikely to die of dehydration. And unless your temperatures are severely cold, starvation is not going to happen for a week or probably considerably more.

Definitely not something worth risking your life over.

Pat, whose next door neighbor when I was a kid (that is, the father of the kids next door) was fatally electrocuted working as a linesman, and who does not particularly want this to happen to anyone else

Real bad idea. Chances are they are working on the line upstream. To say you saw sparks would give the indication someone down stream from you has a generator hooked up and their main service breaker closed in (on). This will cause the workers to stop doing what they are doing until they can be certain of no back feed.
