Hi,
For the past week-and-a-half or so, I have had two chickens that have been looking off. One of them recovered in a couple of days, and the other one, Rosie, seemingly looked fine until recently. The thing about her is that she was eating, her eyes were bright, her comb was red, and she was running around and digging with everyone else. However, whenever there was a period of rest she would huddle up in the corner. Now, that’s all she’s doing. Whatever sickness she has is progressing- I checked her face, neck, under the wings for mites, other issues, but she doesn’t seem to show any symptoms other than the huddling. What else can I do to see if I can narrow it down? I doubt anyone can make a diagnosis right now with the information I’m giving you. And if this helps, Rosie is around four years old, a partridge rock, free ranges regularly, has never been sick before, usually lays but has stopped since she started being sick.
Thank you for your help!

Feel her abdomen for bloat or fluid and make sure her crop is emptying overnight.
It wouldn't hurt to get a fecal float to see if worms are contributing to her decline as well.

Is she pooping? What's that like?

Sometimes older hens can start having reproductive problems and they start to feel bad. Peritonitis, cancer, etc. are a few things common in laying hens. See that she's drinking well and eating.

Hi,
So I think I figured it out- I don’t know the specific name for this but I tried picking her up and feeling her crop and as I did so, this yellowish-brown mucousy liquid came from her beak. Her crop is very squishy and full of this stuff. I tried my best to smell it but I didn’t smell anything sour or bad, but it does seem like sour crop- maybe I just didn’t catch a good whiff. I isolated her with food, water, and grit. How can I best treat this condition? I also heard I should take away her food but I’m not sure if that’s true.
Thanks

Okay, the fluid coming out of her beak is actually pretty brown and watery- and she is making gurgling noise as she is breathing. I massaged some fluid put of her mouth but I’m afraid to do more as I’m afraid she’ll aspirate. What do I do? I am afraid she is going to chicken on this fluid. Also, here is a photo of what came out

I’ve also read I need to get this fluid out, but as previously said, I’m afraid to hold her and massage it out because of the risk of aspiration. Is there any other safer way to do this (like taking a string and sucking it out that way), or will I have to risk aspiration??

Honestly, I don’t know; I haven’t seen her poop anytime recently. We don’t have access to a vet to safely extract anything. I will follow this treatment but I’m still not sure about how to feed and water her right now. Should she have any access to layer feed, water, or grit right now? Thank you so much for your help
