Emergency Rooster lathargic and laying on his side

I would give the Tylan 50 orally or by injection at a dosage of 0.2 ml per pound of weight twice a day for 5 days. A 5 pound hen would get 1 ml, a large hen about 1.5 ml, and a large rooster more. Getting a rough weight with a kitchen scale or by holding the chicken while weighing it, then subtracting your weight.

The foamy eye could be mycoplasma (MG,) but the bad odor and thick nasal drainage sound more like coryza. It is unfortunate that the new birds have probably brought in a bad disease. You may want to cull the sickest bird, and get a necropsy to identify the disease. More than one disease can be present, if there are secondary infections. It can take weeks for chickens to get better from respiratory diseases, but the whole flock should be considered carriers. So sorry.

I was thinking Mycoplasma until I read that the roosters stinks. Does Mycoplasma make them stink?

Ok so I will do my best to try and weigh my birds tomorrow and I’m going to go back out and check on my rooster before I hit the sack.

So far I have given each bird .5ml of Tylan 50 orally , my really sick rooster got .5ml injected in his breast as well as .5ml vetryx orally. I also gave him some water into his mouth through a syringe. He is so out of it he barely lifts his head up. Is there anything else I should do. I’m not sure if he has eaten anything. Are there any tricks to feeding them when they don’t want to eat?

Also with the lively birds it’s going to be a real struggle onnweighing them. Any idea on how much 7 mo Wyandottes should weigh? Can you overdose?

As always thanks for all the help. BYC is a great resource.

I am really sorry! It is awful when they get sick. You can search the forums and see what has worked for others. I read somewhere that someone used deactivated oxine in a fogger and it helped the chickens, but don't quote me on that. I haven't (knock on wood) had any respiratory problems to date. I pray I never do! I think if it was me I would give him some vitamins, like polyvisol without iron. Maybe a little Gatorade and water? But honestly I am far from an expert on Coryza or Mycoplasma.

Wyandottes can be large, so I would give them 1.5 ml orally. Tylan is safe, and Plumbs Veterinary Handbook says that Tylan can be given at a dose of 5-20mg per pound 2-3 times a day. 1 ml of Tylan 40 equals 50mg, so there is a good safety margin.
The most important thing is to get your rooster to drink water. Do not medicate chickens that are not showing symptoms. Some can resist infections.

You are a wonderful person. You take the time to comment on so many of these threads including my own. I just want to say thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Well i cannot say a ton has improved this morning. He still can barely hold his head up and all i can really say about this morning is that he is still alive. I gave him another 1.5CC of Tylan and probably 20-30 CC of water just using a plunger into his mouth. Not really sure what else i can do at this point, if he doesn't make it today i will likely take him to KSU this weekend. I will also go out the later this morning and look to give another dose of Tylan to the other birds which i have to say is an interesting process.

Sorry that he is not much better. He could have some complicating problems such as air sacculitis or fungal infection, such as aspergillosis. Poor guy. It is really tough when they get sick, and we cannot help them. It makes it worse when we have brought in new birds from someone who would sell sick birds who could infect out other healthy birds at home.
We all just want to offer our help to those who want it. The folks on BYC all tend to jump in and give their experiences which may in some way share knowledge. None of us have all the answers, so it is good when all can offer what they know.

Well unfortunately Carlos the Rooster did not make it.... I am continuing to treat the res of the flock and hope i do not lose any more.... Thanks again for all the advice.
