Emergency, save rooster? Or put down?

There is a Tractor Supply in Cleveland. Do you have the ability to drive there or can someone else drive you? In order to get help with your chicken you're going to have to be able to help yourself.

Did you just notice the black on its back today? Have you checked the other birds over thoroughly? If this is indeed a mite infestation, and I'm not convinced it is, than it's quite severe. But if the chickens do have mites, the coop and birds need to be treated.

try some dawn dish detergent see if it will break up some of that but still get medicine for mites and lice
 
I would be tempted to slather the injured/black area with topical antibiotic and then treat the bird with Ivermectin. I would be reluctant to apply a miticide to that area. I believe he can recover from this, but will take time and care.

This is a good idea IMO. The worst that it can do is soften the crust enough that it WILL come off in the bath. My thought is that it's probably just tough. Honey and sugar is good to help debride. A paste applied to the wound really does help slough it off.

Can't hurt at the very least.
