EMERGENCY SEVERE BRAIN INJURY

Never give up on her..unless she gives up on herself...where there is life..there is hope...

PLEASE keep us informed on her progress!

Yes I am working on covering it up. At first I thought it was the skull but it's not bone. Maybe it's muscle or flesh surrounding the skull. I don't know but what I do know is that it is soft and open flesh not bone. I have already isolated her from the flock and put her in a warm dog crate in my house with a heating pad. She is now walking around, eating, and drinking.
I have no problem with culling her. Based on the improvement I am beginning to see (eye blinking, walking, chirping, eating, and drinking) I believe she has a chance. If things go south and she has a relapse or infection sets in I will do what is right and put her down. Thanks for your advice and taking the time to respond

EMT Spray would be a big help. Find family, friend, or neighbor to go get some at TSC or maybe a pharmacy.

Aspirin can cause the wound to bleed more by thinning the blood.

I'm not sure if this one should be closed up or left open to drain. I am more accustomed to dog injuries.

You could stitch it shut and give oral antibiotics while spraying with emt spray and clean bandages. If it starts to swell, remove the stitches and let drain.

I had a barred rock hen present with a very similar injury last fall. It, admittedly, was not as large. But it healed up really well with just a bit of triple antibiotic ointment. Her injury was caused by an oversexed teenage rooster. Was she penned with roos or young cockerels?

Edited to add: That could also be the after-effects of a hawk attack. You should make sure to check her thoroughly for other injuries. especially around the head/neck/crop/breast area.

Hi, I am a bit confused with this case. To me, a head injury, I dont think the skull would just peel away like you may think. I honestly think it is a large hole in her head but I dont think her brain is showing. I would clean it daily maybe even three times a day with something like peroxide or something of that matter.

Of course separate her and watch for swelling. Dont stitch her up, let the wound drain and heal from the inside out. It can cause serious damage if you stitch up an infection in there.

Please remember, its not about us as the owners. Its about the quality of the animal. If you feel she is suffering please do what is best for her. I myself would try if she is improving but if she declines do what is best for her. As someone said above as long as there is life there is hope, I dont completely agree. I think as long as there is a QUALITY life then dont give up. If she is miserable and in pain. Thats not a quality life.

Good luck!! This is one of those freak accidents that we all run into and dread! I hope she does improve!!

Yes like mentioned above if things go south I will do what is right but she is showing signs of improvement so for now I will keep trying. Thanks so much!

Wow. If she's in a frozen state as you said, it is likely shock. Perhaps a predator. What I would recommend is to get to a vet as soon as possible. I have never seen anything like this.

Thanks for replying and worrying. I made a update on page 2 I believe. She is no longer in a frozen state she is up and walking and eating and chirping. From my experience chicken wounds heal very fast and I am expecting the same with her hopefully!

After inspecting it is actually flesh at the base of the head by pulling the skin up the skull may be seen and what looks like to be a scratch or scrape on the skull. I should have been more clearer in title but I was rushing and worrying. Do forgive me! :)
