Emergency tail tucked trying to make noise

So poor little girl died this evening. She seemed like she was back to normal (albeit more sedate because she was secluded from the others) so I was surprised when she took a turn and the symptoms returned (gaping, dark comb). Taking her to UC Davis for necropsy tomorrow to make sure the rest of the girls are safe. Thank you to everyone for your responses. Nice to know there are concerned chicken owners out there.

So sorry. Be sure and let us know what the necropsy shows.

ACK!! Bummer! :hugs
Might have cleared the airway, but lungs may already have been compromised.
Look forward to hearing report.

@Lkaiser, any word from Davis yet?
Thanks for following up. Not yet. Brought her in on Monday morning and was told it would take a few days to get preliminary results and 10 days for full results. Hope to hear soon in case it's something the other girls may be susceptible to. I did get panacur c and vet rx from the feed store. Considering giving it to the girls as a precaution but I am reluctant to give medication if it's not needed...I have two local vets to contact once I get the results to I can coordinate care of the other girls just in case.

I usually call them and but them for the preliminary report.

The Panacur C, those are the granules for dogs? If so, you might want to return them and get some of the liquid for goats instead, it way more cost effective.

Maybe once you get the results you could take one of your girls to one of the local vets just for a wellness exam. This way you could discuss the report and establish a relationship with a vet.

Definitely wait, until you get lab results...could interfere with what's really needed.

Do local vets have avian experience?

Go the report back. She had Marek's. I suspect the other hen I lost a few weeks ago had the same. I have two more girls from that same group of chicks and two more that I got nearly a year later. I suspect they are all infected. From what I've read, that's likely the case. Will call the vet and ask about vaccinating the others in the hope that some will survive. Any other recommendations/advice is welcome.

Good job getting those answers...you were on it. Isn't it good to know now you have that Davis resource? Thats always a comfort to me.
There are a ton of threads on Marek's on BYC. Search the forum for Marek's with posts by rebrascora, or you can pm her. She lives successfully with Marek's in her flock. Someone else will hopefully weigh in with an article too...eggcessive, wyorprock, casportpony?
Thanks so much for sharing the results with us.
