My chicks are only two weeks old, but they out grew the rubber tub I was using in a week. I went to Lowes and got them a big cardboard box, and they are already crowded in that! The coop was finished Sunday, so I thought I'd take them out to see it, just for a few hours. So everybody got in the shuttle bus (the rubber tub I started with) and went out to explore the new room. They loved it! flapping thier wings and running around with all that room! I just couldn't see putting them back in that little box, so my DH ran an extention cord and brought their heat lamp out and we hung it in the corner. They are happy little campers out there, but I am not sleeping so good. I'm out twice a night to check on them (see, there are lots of us crazys on this site)!
The run is not finished yet, but I wanted them to be able to go outside, so yesterday, I took some bird netting, and attached it to the no climb fence on my dog's pen. I staked it down at the bottom so they can't sneak out into the mule's pasture. I put everybody back in the bus and out we went for a picnic! It was so fun watching them find bugs and peck at weeds that seemed to peck back! The humming birds and goldfinches all fluttered around trying to figure out what they were. We just pulled up our chairs and watched them. Abby (the dog) layed there and watched them, wondering what they had done to get put in "jail", as we call it for her.
I want to protect them from everything, but it seems to me that it's worth the risk to have them so happy!
