I bought two hatchlings several years ago. I have had an emu for the past 4 years but alas no eggs so I imagine I have a boy. Darn! But... I know its exciting. But the Emus CAN be humanized a bit. Not a lot but some. I had mine where I could walk up and pet them and they didn't peck or kick me. If I were going to get more emu eggs to hatch I would get them from a breeder and hatch several at the same time and raise them together. They pick a mate from with in the group and it can take up to 4 years for them to lay the first egg.
Feed corn meal mixed with chick starter for the first few months. If you can get some Reptite food do so. They have even a more simple digestion tract than a chicken. When they are grown they can and do well on laymaker pellets, they can eat up to 1.5 gallons of feed a day and will drink up to 8 gallons of water a day full grown, I have a 40 gallon waterer for mine and a horse feed bucket. *hes grown* but as babies they eat a lot.
Hold them every day until they stop struggling and eventually you can hold them till they get too big. After that you can pet them and be in there with them and they know you.
