Emu baby chronicles :) NEW PIC pg 31!!

LOL love the Dr. Seuss thing! Hmmm...possible name? As far as being mean....from what I've read and the people I've spoken too...if you hand raise them and socialize them they tend to be good "pets". Well not really "pets" they are still animals but can be tame. Now they still have the capability to be mean if they choose to so you should always be cautious.

It takes a while for them to stand. He is starting to be able to fumble around to get to me if I sit on the floor away from him. He should be around and walking in the next day or so.

Oh and I keep calling it he but it could possibly be a she. I'll be emailing a pic to someone tommorrow and they will be able to gove me a better idea

Kristina,

Did you use an automatic turner for the egg or did you turn it manually?

Thanks to you, and my HORRIBLE impulse control, I just ordered 3 eggs off of Ebay. I even said I wouldn't order eggs at the beginning of this thread but I changed my mind when I saw that cute big baby.

Anyway, now that I have 3 eggs coming anything you can tell me about the incubation process would be extremely helpful.

Thanks!!

Tami

Kristina thanks for the call tonight. Not very good pictures of the top of the head. But from what I have seen it looks to be a girl . You have a little girl so you need a girl name Yeaaaa. Remember do not be worried because they wont eat till they are 4 days old they also will not be fully on there feet running around till they are a week old. Have fun they are loads of it. Wait till she starts running around a bit.

It isn't even my bird and I Can't wait for her to be running around! LOL
She is absolutely "Aaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwww"
Wonder how your "other kids" are going to take to her.

Hey Angi! I wil try to get a better picture of the top of her head today and send it to you. From what you described on the phone I bet it's a girl.

lexustami...I hand turned a quarter turn every 4 hours (except when I was sleeping). What kind of bator are you using? I used a still air hova bator so I had to fan it for about 15 seconds everytime I opened the bator. Just PM me I can try to help but I'm certainly not an expert.

I just found this on a website:

There are no visible differences between sexes. It has been said that there are five sexes of these ratite birds: male, female, I think its male, I think its female, and darn if I know. Sexing them is hard when they are chicks but once they reach a year the female emu will make a drumming sound and the male will start making a guttural grunting sound.
