emu eggs :-D

This one only lays in early spring. I eat the contents of the eggs.
If you look close at the pic of the egg you will see a small white spot at the very bottom, that is a hole I drilled, along with another one at the other end. I then use a wire bent in the shape of an L, insert it in one end of the egg and twist it to break up trhe yoke. Using very low pressure I blow the egg contents into a bowl. Some of the empty eggs are given to friends childern and grandchildern to show at school and some are sold to craft people who etch and carve sceens on them

Thats awesome !! They look like such interesting birds !! I was just thinking to myself what a huge fried egg that would be, LOL!!!

So each girl lays how many eggs a season ? Sorry for all the questions, just very interesting to me !!

We get 3 or 4 eggs each spring.

What are your plans for the emu chicks you hatch? I had heard that there was a time when many folks were raising emu because their meat was supposed to be healthy (low in cholesterol) and their fat or something was supposed to be helpful for folks with arthritis. But the market didn't last for them, and that many emu keepers were getting rid of their birds.

I'd heard someone ask "What do you want with an animal that is as strong as a horse but as dumb as a chicken?"

I was driving home recently & encountered a lady running in the street, trying to drive an emu chick back into its yard. Its owner wasn't home, but this woman was trying to persuade the chick to go back into its yard, so it wouldn't get hurt or cause an accident. The poor chick was scared & running full tilt into the surrounding fences. It looked so surreal, as big as a pony but behaving like a baby chick.

Please tell us more about your emu!

Are emus friendly??, cause I couldn't see fightin' with one like I have to do with some of my crazy chickens.
It would probably peck me in the head and I'd be out!

well. we rescued a pair of emu's. this is their 3rd season now and we have not been successful with hatching the past 2. were hoping now that they are fully mature that the eggs are fertile but you can not tell unless you have a really expensive lighting machine. so anyway. its a sanctuary for animals injured or unwanted. we take them in and accept that animal for what it is and let it live its life to the fullest. we have emus black bears to mountain lions to binturongs to chickens people throw over the fences. were hoping for more emu's because we've built a huge cage and want some more. they really are great birds if you get to know them outside what they look like or those big scary gutting claws lol.
