Emu Hatch-a-long 2012

Farmer chef ..... never mind.......I guess 1 day won't matter, I never used to weigh eggs , they still hatched lol . When  I got my 1st Emu eggs, a Lady I got 6 Rhea   eggs from, some years back...said to weigh them...so I put one EMU  egg on my very old kicthen scale...... while I reached for next.......Promptly tipped tray and fell on floor lol  end of story.

For Newbies who incubate Eggs 1st time.....or had bad luck in past and yet Eggs were fertile.

If you have to hand turn egg or moving eggs out onto scales, make sure to put egg back same way, don’t keep turning them in one direction, but back to the original position or opposite, if turning is due and be quick doing it.,because you will tangle the cord that holds the yolk in place and kill the embryo. The less disturbance the better.

I genty tilt and turn my eggs, back and forth,  so never have to open Incubater, just quick syringe water in wells,  when needed..
Aim to turn an odd number of times through the day so the eggs don’t lie on the same side every night.

Thats why I drew an arrow on the tape on my egg, so I mke sure to turn it back and forth the same way. Theres another on the other side, they point to each other.

I got 3 more eggs in the mail. They are egg 6, egg 7 and egg8. Egg 7 is such a pretty color - sky blue with white clouds I call it. Was told that these colored eggs did hatch for the seller last year, so she included one for me to try.
Weights:
Egg 6 - 523 grams
Egg 7 - 635 grams
Egg 8 - 595 grams

very pretty! May i ask where you got those?

You may also want to keep a close eye on the blue/white one.. I have read where they may have a few problems (losing too much or too little weight).. and depending on how thick the shell is you may end up having to assist. Some of the ones like that are missing the outer coating of the emerald green.. others have the emerald green but have additional coatings of the white and blue (missing a second coating of the emerald). I'm not sure how you can tell the difference between ones with extra coatings (of missing the final one) other than grinding through the shell to see how many layers there are. BUT by checking the weight loss over the first week and comparing it to the emerald eggs that are incubated at the same time should give you an idea of what you are dealing with.

Good luck with those (and I would love to get a couple of those for myself)!

The 2 green ones just have dirt on them and are normal color. I got them from the same place I got the first ones. She forgot to put in the heat pad and some of them had moisture on the eggs when they arrived. The temp was 27 degrees so some must've froze during shipment. Eggs 2 and 4 were covered in a "dew" like wetness. Egg 5 had a little bit but not much. She sent me these eggs to replace those eggs. So far eggs 2 and 4 ended up smelling and were removed from the incubator. Egg 5 is holding on so far. Here are yesterdays Dec 30 weights:

Egg 1 -
Dec 16 - 471
Dec 23 - 458 = 13 grams or 2.76%
Dec 30 - 447 = 11 grams or 2.40%
Egg 2 - Removed smelly
Egg 3 -

Dec 16 - 443
Dec 23 - 431 = 12 grams or 2.71%
Dec 30 - 421 = 10 grams or 2.32%
Egg 4 -
Dec 16 - 419
Dec 23 - 411 = 08 grams or 1.91%
Dec 30 - 403 = 08 grams or 1.95% Removed smelly
Egg 5 -

Dec 16 - 462
Dec 23 - 447 = 15 grams or 3.25%
Dec 30 - 437 = 10 grams or 2.24%

I will post the weight lose of eggs 6-8 on Sundays (even though the weights are taken on Saturdays) along with Eggs 1-5 so it doesn't take 2 posts each week

This eggs don't look good, if wet when unpacked, Yoda,
"dew" like wetness.....is what some of my 5 eggs were last season, actually one was dripping...been 3 days in post.. (courier ) .hence gone off and contaminated my own eggs.
they should be dry, no matter what temperature outside, were they not well wrapped and padded with lots of newpapers or foam ?

Interesting that Egg 4 had the slowest weight loss of them all.

I hope you don't mind, but I used your eggs to test a spreadsheet I set up, if you'd like to use it yourself here's a link:

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B2h04KL5_5FHUWY3cFVxSnE5eTQ

You can view it with Open Office, which is free to download and use here:

But here's what the spreadsheet looks like:

Basically you punch in the initial egg weight into the blue line and it automatically calculates the minimum and maximum weights, then a graph is automatically updated below for each additional weighing. Makes it really easy to visually track their progress.
Ignore the Day 56 and Day 53 columns, this sheet is configured for a 13.5% weight loss on day 49, the other two are for calculating a longer incubation at a lower temperature.
