Emu Hatch-a-long 2012

Ok here is the weight for egg 6 I could've sworn it moved but could just been my eyes wanting it too. It seems it's weight loss is steady and on track, is that normal for a non fertile or bad egg to do?

Egg 6 -
Dec 29 - 523 - % goal loss 78.45
Jan 05 - 511 = 12 grams or 2.29%
Jan 12 - 497 = 14 grams or 2.74%
Jan 19 - 487 = 10 grams or 2.01%
Jan 26 - 477 = 10 grams or 2.05%
Feb 02 - 466 = 11 grams or 2.31%
Feb 09 - 455 = 11 grams or 2.36%

unfortunately yes

infertiles, scrambled and rotten ones can still lose weight on track.. and you won't know until after the hatch due date has passed or if they start to smell

have you tried tap testing it yet? A rotten or infertile which has the membrane drawn back will have the fine china "TINK" of a sounded egg. But if the membrane is still intact it will still have the deeper "THUNK" sound

Today she seems to be her old self. She wants me to hold her and I am on here so she is screaming (whistling really loud constantly) at me. She does seem to have a touch of the runs. Her poop is very watery but she is constantly drinking now. I only give her pedialyte to drink, should I back off of it and give her water?

YAY!!!

I would for a day and see how she does.. and also I would keep her on the vitamins for several more days to help prevent a relapse

You should post everything you gave (dosage and frequency) her in case anyone else ever needs the info.. and also so you can refer back to it if needed

New weights

Egg #1 begin 697
wk 1- 674
wk 2- 655

Egg #2 begin 704
wk 1- 683
wk 2- 664

I did put a humidifier in the room, Had to be filled frequently and did not run nonstop because of running out occasionally.
What do you think? Add more moisture?

ok.. egg 1 needs to lose about 104.55 grams total over the incubation
so thats about 13 grams a week

egg 2 would need to lose about 105.6 grams total
and 13.44 grams a week

egg 1 lost 23 grams between the first and second weigh in
19 grams between the second and third

egg 2 lost 21 grams between first and second
and 19 grams between the second and third

see where this is going?

I would add water to the bator as well as keeping the humidifier on for another week.. the weigh loss really needs to slow down more than it is to even out... BUT you are showing progress with slowing it down some.. they just need to slow down more to help make up for that loss

Is the fan blowing directly onto the eggs? (I don't remember if you told us or not)

Lol.. Raptor may want to double check my math.. I took some pain killers last night for a tooth ache and need to take a few more.. so my brain cell is a bit mushy at the moment!

Thank you,Thank you for helping me, the math confuses me and I question my results.
I added water and hopefully things will even out a bit.
I'll keep an eye on it.

A friend gave my son some fertile quail eggs a few days ago and we threw them in the incubator that is full of chicken eggs. It ia fun to see those teeny eggs compared to the big Emu ones. We also have a blown ostrich egg. Amazing comparison -now we've just gotta find a hummingbird egg, right?!

So they're definitely loosing a bit too fast. Cyndiloowho, if you didn't catch the bit earlier on in the thread about these tables, the two Red rows are the safe minimum and maximum weight loss and the Green row is right in the middle of those two. If you bump your humidity up to about ~60% and let it run a week you can push the eggs back up into that safe zone no problem, though it may take two or three weeks to get close to the numbers in the green row, if they keep going at the same rate they are now they'll be at a 19% weight loss by the time they hatch. I had this same problem with both of my eggs last year and after increasing the humidity to slow em down a bit they got a 12% and 13% weight loss at hatch.

thanks Raptor.. I knew you could plug them into your charts without a second thought

This tooth has been a bugger off and on.. one of these days I need to get it yanked out..
pain killers are loads of fun though.. makes me feel like my brain is stuck in about a foot of mud...

Raptor-Thank you for the chart! I love having a visual, works so much better for me

I just printed it to put right next to the incubator. It will really help me keep track. That was very kind of you.

yinepu- sorry about your toothache, they are the WORST! Ibuprofin around the clock is the only thing that helps when I get a bad one. Hope you can rest and feel better
