English Shepherd as Poultry Guardian

Looks like Lucy knows when poultry netting is hot and acts differently when it is not. When it is hot she jumps it free and clear. When off she paws in down like she does barbed wire and makes a much lazier sort of jump. She likely goes by sound. She has been shocked enough in the last three years to figure this out.

My dad says they can smell the electricity

Generally we can hear the pops associated with the poultry netting as it is hard to fix all shorts. Fence still hot with shorts. Dogs I think can hear the clicking of charger itself as charger is currently no more than 100 yards from farthest point of fence.

Researchers did find that dogs can distinguish a contraption with electrical current running through it from an identical contraption with no current running through. They theorize the dogs can detect the resulting ozone.

I was in a pet store with my old dog and he completely avoided a pillar in the middle of the aisle, sniffing the air in its direction but pushing himself against the shelving as we passed by. When I looked closer, the outlet in the pillar had a plug prong broken off and lodged in the outlet. Managment got a hefty shock when trying to cover it with tape once I informed them. There was no sound that I could hear but something about it triggered the reaction in my dog.
